I have this book - I haven't read it, but I have it *g* I didn't know it was the first in a series. Plus, I thought Charlie was male (but that is probably down to the fact that I've invented a couple of OCs called 'Charlie' who were male & one of our neighbour's grandson's is Charlie. I digress.

From reading your review I might well dig this book out of whatever folder it is lurking in, and read it this year.

I would have thought Charlie was male, too, except there’s a photo and brief bio on her Amazon page.

You could probably use this book as a “bookish book.” One of the main characters is a writer in the midst of writing a novel, and that plays a role in the story. Plus Whimbrel House has a library … although it tends to hurl books at people. 🙂

Other than the places where the descriptive prose is a bit overdone, you could very well enjoy this book. If nothing else, the writing is good. I’ve been getting tired of the clumsy, simplistic writing banged out at top speed by some self published authors.

I'm glad it's not just me. Ah, I didn't see that. I was going to say I don't know a female Charlie, but we do . . .

Yes I think that is probably why I bought the book in the first place and it might well be lurking in my Books about Books folder. Now I'm really intrigued: a library that hurls books at people?

I shall definitely add it to my mental list of 'what to read next' book - after I've finished my latest AC novel.

Actually, the brief bio made me think of our Charlie, because it mentioned this Charlie being a trekkie at a young age. 🙂

It sounds like a really interesting book. It's probably more up my alley than yours, but I'm glad you enjoyed it and may continue the series.

I probably will read the next one in the series. It’s not expensive, and the writing of this book was several steps above the writing of many samples I’ve read recently. If you like fantasy, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this.
