Your annoyances with Andrews are much the same as mine. Her population of characters is hard to follow sometimes. You're also right on the money that the time table doesn't work for all the characters.
But she is a good writer, especially for dialogue and she can be quite humorous. I just read her most recent book, Rockin' Around the Chickadee and enjoyed it. I gave it four stars out of five on Goodreads.
Here's my short review.
As usual there are several stories going at once in this latest mystery by Donna Andrews. The main story line focuses on a Presumed Innocent conference being held just before Christmas. There's also a family situation when Rob's wife Delaney is on bed rest at the end of her pregnancy. Having a body found in Meg's backyard isn't good for anyone's blood pressure.
There's a lot of moving parts to the story along with dozens of characters all seasoned with humor. Sometimes it's hard to keep up, but it all pulls together at the end.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll probably read that one at some point if I find it on sale. I’ve reached the point with the series that it doesn’t seem to matter what order the books are read in. Just wondering - have you ever read Andrews’ Turing Hopper series? I remember reading the first two books of the series a long, long time ago but not being able to find the others. (I think there were four in total.) I don’t think they’re well known, though, and my memory of the two I’ve read is so vague that I’d have to start back at the beginning if I did find them.
I try to read most series in order, but with Andrews books, I agree that it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.
No, I've not read the Turing Hopper series. I read a synopsis and it didn't appeal.
Right now I'm reading the latest Rhys Bowen novel We Three Kings, which is the latest in her Royal Spyness series. I've really enjoyed her earlier books . I'll let you know how this one goes if you're interested.
Sure, I’m always interested in book reviews. I think I read the first book in that series a long time ago but, for one reason or another, didn’t continue it. Maybe I’ll try it sgain sometime 🙂
I'm currently reading an actual published book, which is a rarity for me. It's a romance novel, which is also a rarity. I've read fanfic that can only honestly be described as romance, and I've read several Jane Austin novels, but otherwise I am a newbie to this genre. I must admit that I think the book would be improved by the addition of some gun fights or aliens or something. I still like it pretty well, though, and I got it for free through my library's app, so you can't beat the price.
I hope you write a review after you finish the book. I enjoy reading reviews, even of genres (like modern romance) that I rarely read. Like you, I tend to want something more (action or fantasy or mystery) if I’m reading modern romance.
Golly, thirty-six books is a lot in one series. I don't think I shall be trying it, even though it does sound an enjoyable series, despite the niggles you have.
I'm glad it was worth the few dollars you paid for it.
It’s pretty amazing that the series has been going strong for twenty-five years. And Andrews has an actual publisher; the series isn’t self-published. So that does say something about the quality of the writing.

Sounds interesting. Mystery with nerds.
