At first Leeteuk had thought that Yesung was a strong man, independent and capable of taking care of himself. He thought that Yesung did not need him as a leader to be there to support him during hard times. Leeteuk didn’t even remember hearing him talk much, taking the assumption that he was the strong and silent type that likes to keep everything to himself. He would just sit there and nod silently, his, rather large, head bobbing up and down as he absorbed comments fired at him, whether it be positive or negative.

It wasn’t until a year after debut did Leeteuk realize that Yesung was not as strong as he presented himself in front of him. As perceptive as Leeteuk claimed he was, he completely had not known that Yesung was actually one of the more fragile members of the group despite his age. As sensitive as they come, Yesung took every critique to heart, forcing himself to dance harder, sometimes to the point that his voice took a negative hit due to the stress.

“Yesungie. Can I talk to you for a bit?” Leeteuk had been observing his dongsaeng closely for the last few days and it was apparent the singer was troubled. His eye bags had grown deeper and darker, the red veins bursting inside his eye. His skin lost its golden radiance and became dull. Physically he looked drained.

“Talk to me Sungie, what’s wrong?” Leeteuk closed the door and led him to his bed. Yesung politely accepted as he sat down on the comfortable mattress, his hands grazing over the silk blanket.

“Nothing’s wrong hyung.” Yesung coughed out as his gaze avoided eye contact with the leader, furthering confirming his suspicions. Yesung was obviously troubled and had a lot on his mind, but yet he kept avoiding Leeteuk even though it was just the two of them.

“Sungie ah… you know it hurts me if you don’t talk to me about your troubles,” Leeteuk looked kindly into his eyes, forcing Yesung to make eye contact. “I want to know how you’re feeling, what’s going on, things that are bothering you…”

“Hyung I’m really fine.” Yesung forced a smile, one of his fake smiles he would put on whenever someone made a joke about him and he had to politely take it in. Leeteuk had seen that smile far too many times. Yesung didn't deserve half the shit that people dished out on him just because he didn't retalliate back.

“Am I not worthy of being a listener…” Leeteuk faked a bitter tone of voice, knowing it would do the trick to opening up Yesung’s mouth and heart.

“No no no how could you think that.” Yesung blurted out in the most casual tone Leeteuk had heard from him.

“Then why do you not come talk with me… I don’t think I’m worthy of being the leader of our group if I don’t have the members with me…”

“Hyung is a great leader, no doubt about that.” Leeteuk sensed that Yesung was on the verge of tears, his voice trembling and lips quivering. He didn’t want to make the boy cry so he changed his path.

“Then is there a reason why you avoid me?” Leeteuk pressed his hands onto Yesung’s shoulders, massaging them lightly.

“It’s just awkward…” Yesung said softly as he flicked his bangs out of his eyes, “I’m not Heechul, your same age buddy. Nor am I Hankyung and talk to you about his difficulties with the Korean language… and I’m not Youngwoon…”

Leeteuk saw Yesung struggle with Kangin’s name. Leeteuk wasn’t blind; it was quite obvious that Yesung had something for Kangin. Even before his close studying on Yesung, he had known that it was more then fan service between the two, at least on Yesung’s part. His eyes would sparkle whenever Kangin did something. To be honest he was a bit upset about it but he didn’t dare tell anyone anything.

“… who you do so much fanservice with. I’m just there… in the middle…” Yesung hummed to himself, “I’m not a dongsaeng or a close friend… I’m just there…”

“So that’s why you never approach me about anything… because you think ‘you’re just there’.” Leeteuk quoted him as Yesung nodded, his hair falling down and covering his eyes again. Leeteuk took his right hand off his shoulder and gently held Yesung’s cheek.

“Well you’re not just there Sungie. You were never just there. You were always here...” Yesung looked up at Leeteuk, his eyes shimmering in tears, "in my heart."

Leeteuk held Yesung’s cheek as they closed in for a supportive hug; his shoulder already wet from his tears.

Leeteuk had meant more then being a pillar of support for Yesung with that final statement before Yesung started bawling, but he thought it would be best if things remained the way they were. After all, nothing was more important than their friendship and camaraderie, not even Leeteuk’s secret affections for the lead singer of the group.
