“Yuri ah, we have a new child coming tomorrow.” Seohyun called out while she fixed the jackets in the cubby room.

“What new child…” Yuri called back from the kitchen as she scanned the refrigerator, deciding on their afternoon snack.

“Didn’t Soo tell you?” Seohyun said as she held up a muddied yellow rain jacket, specks of dried dirt falling to the ground as she loosened it up before folding it neatly.

“Umm no. Because you two fight way too much, can’t you guys grow up?”

“It’s not my fault she’s so petty with everything. Just because I ate her chocolate bar that one time…” Seohyun muttered as she kicked a pair of navy blue rain boots inside the hole.

“Well anyways, we have half an hour before the kids come.” Yuri cut her off as she closed the fridge and opened the freezer, “and what were you saying about the new kid?”

The main door swung open as Sungmin reluctantly walked in with his mommy. He held onto his bunny doll in his right hand, his left hand grasping his mommy’s smooth hand.

“Hey Seohyun, sorry I am early, I have to go to a meeting so I’m going to drop off Sungmin earlier today. Bye pumpkin.” Mrs. Lee stuffed the bed sheet and weekly necessities to Seohyun and was out the door. Sungmin rubbed his eye sleepily with his left hand as he stood in the middle of the cubby room.

“Sungmin, take off your coat and go inside, okay?” Seohyun smiled sweetly as she fixed up the gloves and scarves, trying her best to match the gloves despite the muddied colours looking alike.

“No.” Sungmin shook his head and sat on the bench.

“Sungmin ah.” Yuri called out from the kitchen, her head poking through the small window between the kitchen and the cubby room, “Look what Yuri has.” She shook a ziplock bag with frozen grapes.

“I don’t vant.” Sungmin kicked off his boots and crossed his arms, hugging onto his bunny doll.

Seohyun poked her head through the gap as Sungmin swung his legs at the bench, making loud kicking noises whenever his feet collided with the wood.

“They’re like… half an hour early…” Seohyun whispered as Yuri popped a grape into her mouth, shivering at the delight of the sweet, but cold, fruit.

“I… know… riighhtt…” Yuri breathed out as she fanned her mouth, balling her fists at the coldness, “cold… cold… cold…”

Seohyun slightly turned her head around and saw Sungmin twisting his bunny in all sorts of shapes before she turned back to Yuri. She heard a small thud when she saw the soft bunny hit the door.

“He seems angry…” Seohyun said while Yuri gave her a frozen grape.

“Do you not remember what happens if Sungmin doesn’t get his sleep…” Yuri laughed at Seohyun’s facial expression when the coldness seeped into her mouth, numbing her cheeks. “Let me talk to him.”

Seohyun nodded as the two girls switched jobs.

“Sungmin ah… Yuri is here.” Yuri kneeled down in front of Sungmin, who picked up his doll and plopped himself back onto the bench, “What’s wrong Minnie.”

“Hmph.” Sungmin pouted and threw the doll over her shoulder.

“Minnie… no throwing things, remember the rules?” Yuri ruffled his hair before Sungmin shrugged away from her touch. He jumped off the bench and fetched his doll. “Someone could get hurt.”

“No.” Sungmin pulled hard on the bunny ears, using it like a slingshot as he flung the doll at the glass door again.

“Sungmin. I said no throwing things.” Yuri raised her voice to an authoritative tone, her hand grabbing his arm, “did you hear me?”

“NO.” Sungmin began crying when Yuri raised her voice. “I… vant to. Go. Home.”

Yuri’s heart lurched with guilt as she looked at Sungmin crying, his favourite bunny doll forgotten on the floor mat behind her. His small body trembled in his over sized pink jacket as he wailed on the bench.

“Oh god… Sungmin ah…” Yuri sat beside Sungmin and lifted him onto her lap, “Yuri is sorry… Sungmin ah.” She rocked the boy slowly in her embrace despite his fidgeting.

“Home. I vant home.” Sungmin wailed as he forced himself off her lap as he ran to the door, almost tripping over his discarded doll. He pounded against the glass door and tried reaching for the metal handle, which was too high for the small boy.

Kangin was outside in the playground, laughing happily as he let go of his daddy’s hand.

Sungmin bit his bottom lip while Yuri wrapped her arms around the boy, pulling him away from the door.

“Good morning Yuri.” The father politely tipped his hat to her, “I hope dropping him off a tad bit early today is okay with you guys.”

“Yeah that’s not a problem.”

“Thanks, you guys are such sweet hearts. Bye kiddo.” Mr. Kim patted Kangin’s head as he reached for the handle, “Play nice today okay?”

“Ah are you crying again?” Kangin laughed at Sungmin as he tore off his jacket, waving simultaneously to his leaving father, “Bye daddy!!!”

Sungmin looked at him in disgust as he took the bunny from Yuri and hugged it tightly.

“Are you a cry baby Sungmin?” Kangin teased while he took off his boots, kicking them aside.

“I am not.” Sungmin said angrily as he chucked his doll at Kangin, hitting him on head.

“Sungmin ah, if you do that one more time, you are playing by yourself for the whole day.” Yuri grabbed his arm and shook him, “say sorry to Kangin right now.”

“No.” Sungmin pouted and looked the other way.

“Sungmin. I will count to three.”

“NO.” Sungmin jumped up and down, stomping with all his might, “No, no, no, no, no, no.”

“It’s okay teacher Yuri.” Kangin picked up Sungmin’s bunny doll as he reached into the pocket of his dark blue sweater, “I was going to show Sungmin something new I learn for lego, but Sungmin is too mad.”

“I even bring him a few pink piece.” Kangin showed Yuri the handful of pink lego pieces.

Sungmin’s eyes lit up at the pink pieces. He instinctively reached for them inside Kangin’s palm before the older boy closed his fingers around them. There was never any pink lego in the lego pond. Sungmin looked disappointed when Kangin cut off the pieces from view.

“I guess I will play by myself until Heechul comes.” Kangin turned and smiled at Yuri, his back facing against Sungmin.

“I vant to pway.” Sungmin unzipped his jacket as Kangin walked into the rainbow room, “Kanggggin. Wait for me.”

Yuri picked up both their jackets off the floor. Kangin gave back the bunny doll to Sungmin as he grabbed his hand, squeezing together to fit through the door.

“Kangin sure is good with his words,” Seohyun called out while washing her hands under the tap.

“Quick thinker too. I don’t even know how he does it sometimes.” Yuri folded Sungmin’s jacket before she placed it into his cubby.
