HEY Its Mary Kate. I spent the summer working in Shanghai a few summers back... I even met up with John Tong. Random, I know. But there a few places that I remember that I feel like you would enjoy. Unfortunately I went alone so there were times when I craved ANYTHING in English so I would go to bookstores. One of my favorites was Garden Books, by Shaanxi Nan Lu. They sell books in English as well as their version of gelato. It smells wonderful in there. The address in Chinese is 长乐路325号. In pinyin its 325 Changle Lu I'm pretty sure.
I should add that the books are a little more expensive than other books stores, but they speak english and the area and the bookstore are really pretty.
