Sometimes I think people take LJ far too seriously. An example of this is a member who I believed recently put a complaint about me to LJ Abuse service. "What the hell did you do?" I hear you cry, I invited her to join my movie community. I knew she had an interest in film, so, wanting to get more members I commented in her journal, inviting her to ( Read more... )

there's a feature now when deleting a comment, you can declare a comment as spam and you also have the option of banning the person from commenting on your journal...I'm assuming that checking that box to indicate that the owner of the journal considers it spam must send a message to the LJ Abuse team...I didn't necessarily put those two together until you've described it just now...she might not have personally written a complaint beyond that...

many years ago, I had a book I wanted to sell...it was called Opposing Viewpoints: An Aging Population...for some reason I had two copies of it, and it was brand new...I wanted it to go to someone who it would be useful for, but when I put it on eBay no one responded...so I decided to post on a newsgroup about it, not realizing that the people there would consider it spam...someone complained, and I apologized (or at least tried to--I don't remember if it went through at this point), but I lost my entire e-mail address and all the messages it contained over it, without any kind of input ( ... )

It's nice to hear someone else's story and good to know I'm not alone. Thanks for sharing. That is the biggest problem with communicating in this modern way, it's so easy for people to take things the wrong way and be easily offended by a simple action, frustrating to say the least.

The person you speak of clearly has no grounded sense of community at all. It thoroughly annoyed me to hear about that, as well you know!

As you put it yourself, it's online and open to - pretty much - everyone. They need to get a life instead of complaining pointlessly about other, more friendly and hospitable people!!

I'm glad that person is not a memeber of the movie community, it's too good for them.

You rock dandywalker, keep up the great work. Life's too short for idiot worries!! :0 :0

Over-sensitive twat.

Her, I mean...not you....

Oh God, I can see how this sort of thing spirals out of control.

Having no comeback is VERY frustrating - I've learnt that from working in shops.

My customer service training with HMV still didn't teach me to be tolerate of such people who are ignorant and stupid!

It's good to know I have my LJ buddies around for support (and my real life buddies too!)

Don't sweat it - if they are that small minded, their opinion of you or your actions doesn't even rate.

You have a great community, and it is worth sharing with others. Have you posted in one of those "Join my Community" groups?

I've thought about it, but does anyone actually look at those?

As for small minded people, LJ certainly has it's fair share. I'm glad I have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Online communications are fraught with dangers. I was once on a gay friendly mailing list [it was for a lesbian musician] and posted a response to someone -- who I later learnt was the list owner -- making a light-hearted crack. Or so I thought. It turns out that numerous people emailed her telling her that I was being homophobic [stop laughing at the back] as there was no smiley icon to tell them it was a joke and my sig line was a quote from a Ambition by Subway Sect which read as follows, "And I won't be tempted by vile evils, 'cos vile evils are vile evils."Apparently whatever it was I wrote (which I can no longer remember) was construed by them all as me being anti-gay!!! Of course, in the end I simply stopped participating in the list and signed off. Life is a)too short for fuckwits b) too short to have to use emotiocons to show people that you are harmless or JUST BEING WITTY and c) to worry about things like this ( ... )

I'm just glad you're a member of our community, because it wouldn't be the same without you! And when the hell are you coming to visit us again?!
