KitchenAid Mixers

With Z making wedding cakes with all of their attendant fondant, we're thinking about getting a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. I can never figure out if they are worth all of the hype or not, but I know a lot of people on my flist have them. Which one do you have? Do you think it is worth it? I have of the five quart commercial types. It's more than I would have spent for myself-it was a gift, but it's amazing.

If you're anywhere near Costco, that's where Mom got mine...they often have coupons in the coupon books that Costco mails out, too.

I went with the 6-qt bowl-lift model. I don't bake much these days, but it's definitely worth it. And whether you go with the 5-qt Artisan or the 6-qt Professional, KitchenAids last forever. My grandmother (who, granted, doesn't use it much anymore) still has hers from (I think) the 1940s. I think the 5- versus 6-qt depends on how often you'll use it and for what, and to a certain extent whether you prefer lift versus tilt styles.

We have the 5qt Artisan and it's fantastic. Unquestionably worth the hype. We've never had reason to wish for more capacity or a bigger motor, but we've also never tried to make wedding cake.

I have the 5 qt and LOVE it - wedding present, so 11 years old now, still in excellent shape.
