What you're going to have to worry about most is the kitten's "adventureous" nature in the first year. She's going to see each shelf, each perch, each windowsill, as new conquerable territory, and she's going to knock stuff over in the process. Not to mention anything small and light enough to be batted around. She'll eventually settle in to the habit of sleep all day, play at night, as Faye does now.
I was allergic to cats badly as a kid, but I took Allegra so we could keep our cat. (I developed allergies after moving a bunch-military brat) After about three years I wasn't so bad anymore. Now, as long as I keep the cat hair out of my nose and eyes I'm fine around them. In fact I miss my Xena kitty at school. So I'm sure that over the years your allergies might have changed too. But keeping the cat off your pillows is a wise, wise decision.
Don't worry too much about your wife...or the cat. They'll work something out. Cat's are pretty easy going generally. Give 'em love when your around and they won't pine away when your gone (like a dog will). Their devotion is the same, but expressed differently. Good luck with the new adittion to the family!
