Hello, The Television

I will now continue talking at you about television:

Even before Joss Whedon's new show, Dollhouse premiered, they've been saying that we should give it until episode 6 before judging. Just hold out, they said, and you will find the show you're hoping for.

I watched the much-prophesied sixth episode, "Man on the Street", and I've got to tell you ( Read more... )

I have not yet seen Kings, but I agree with your assessment of Dollhouse completely. Holy crap - I will now avoid all vases with yellow flowers. I figured that the series was going to tell a story that took time to gear up (most good stories do) so I decided to stick with the series and see where it was going. Not disappointed.

So... who's the inside man who made Echo his karate-kicking post-it note?

There are two ways to go at the mystery informant:

1. Applying meta-logic, they keep showing that Token Punky Asian Girl and giving her nothing to do. For a straightforward "inside agent" subplot, I'd probably choose her.

2. Working strictly within narrative confines, Ms. DeWitt described Agent Helo as "not the type to remove himself from the case just because his superiors have" (or something to that effect). I think it would be clever of her to give him the illusion of a source inside the Dollhouse, especially since his suspension frees him from all that pesky due process. It might be a bit too twisty, but if I were writing it, I'd probably make it just another method of control employed by DeWitt.

There is also the possibility that they'll come up with something much better that I haven't considered.

We are recording Kings on our DVR as we both saw the previews and thought it looked awesome. We haven't watched any of the episodes yet, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the first two given this ringing endorsement from you.

Re: Dollhouse, it's intriguing, but nothing that La Femme Nikita didn't do back in the '90s. Actually, the show pretty much apes LFN unrepentantly. Since LFN was one of my favorite shows back in the day and I own all the DVDs, I enjoy Whedon's new venture for what it's worth.

A word of caution on Kings: the pilot misses a few key notes, especially in the latter half of the 1.5 hours. As a whole, I think I like the second episode better ( ... )
