Adam and his band were playing a place close to where Kris was vacationing with Katy, so Adam asked if they wanted to come see the show and maybe meet up before that for some catching up. They'd never seen the new tour. Katy couldn't make it to the social gathering due to a migraine, but she promised to make it to the concert the next day. But Kris said sure, that it'd be fun to catch up.
It turned out that Adam was suddenly a little swamped that day so the guy Kris surprisingly ended up spending the most time with was Tommy, Adam's bassist. They had talked at that other concert a little, but he didn't really know him all that well.
But he couldn't help noticing the way that Tommy's eyes tended to follow Adam around when he was close to them. And not just in that 'oh, hey there's Adam' but more like 'Oh, hey I kinda like you and think you're hot' way.
Of course, when he saw that Kris had noticed he tried to stop doing it, but he couldn't help himself. It actually reminded Kris of how he had acted around Katy before they started dating, but he'd been in high school then.
Kris didn't know how to bring it up, but he really wanted to ask Tommy. You can't really go up to a guy and say 'Oh, hey do you have a crush on your male boss?' Maybe the guy's just really cuddly like a cat.
But Kris knew he had to somehow bring it up after what'd happened earlier. The two were just sitting on one of the buses' sideways couches and talking, when all of a sudden Adam popped up and took a seat next to Tommy.
And man, were they touchy feely. Or well, more Tommy touchy feely. Adam just let it happen, but sometimes gave Tommy this 'what's up with you?' look. It seemed as if he thought it was cute and all, but he didn't get what Tommy was doing.
Then there was the whole Tommy trying to ask Adam something that sounded suspiciously like going out to dinner with him, but kept getting interrupted by this or that, and when Adam asked if it was anything important Tommy said it wasn't, even though the look on his face said it was more than a little important to him.
Okay, so maybe he wasn't supposed to hear that bit. They probably thought he was still on the phone with Katy. After that Kris caught Tommy's hand and pulled him away, which seemed to surprise him. Then when he realized Kris may have overheard what he was saying to Adam he went even paler than he already was.
"So, is it safe to assume that you may have a crush on our shared friend?" Kris asked Tommy, who had that 'deer in headlights' look down pat.
"Uh, what do you mean? I mean, that's crazy. Of course not," Tommy mumbled and denied it all.
"Please, I've only been hanging around you for a few hours, and seriously, you kinda look like a smitten teenager. Like the way I was around Katy, before I asked her out... in High School." Kris told him, and, man, who would have thought the laid back American idol could be this... stern.
"Yeah, okay. So what if it's true? It's not like he knows or anything. I'm not even sure he'd like me like that," Tommy told him, and looked down at his creepers.
"Don't be so sure; have you seen Brad?" Kris asked him, and winked at him.
"That doesn't mean much. I don't know; I don't want to talk about it. Especially with you, okay? You're his friend. It's kinda uncomfortable," Tommy told him, and started to walk away.
"I'm your friend, too, if you want. You know, I'm not like judging you or anything. I just want to help you," Kris told Tommy, walking up to him and putting his hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, sure. See you later," Tommy mumbled to him, and walked off. Kris turned around and saw Adam looking at him, an eyebrow arched like 'what was that?'
-**-
"Hey, so what was that all about?" Adam asked Kris, who just shrugged his shoulders and checked his phone for something - Maybe even his Twitter.
"Nothing. Just chatting. But I wanted to ask you a hypothetical question. Would you date Tommy? Like if he asked you out on a date or something?" Tommy might kill Kris for doing this, but hey, sometimes he was just curious, okay? Plus, Tommy's a nice guy, and he wanted to help him.
"Umh, I don't know. I don't really see him like that. He's my straight bass player. Sure, he likes to play up that Adommy stuff on stage and he's really touchy feely and open minded, but other than that I don't think he sees me like that either. Why?" Adam asked him, giving Kris a look that asked 'what are you even on about?'
"Oh, umh. He may have asked me out on a date?" Kris lied, and watched Adam's eyes go as wide as a cartoon owl's.
"What? But he does know you're married, right?" Adam asked him, looking shocked at this recent development.
"Oh, this was after I told him I'm getting divorced," Kris told him, and usually he was a crap liar but for some reason the lies just kept coming, and he couldn't stop them. Holy shit, what was going on here?
"Wait, what!? Why didn't you tell me?" Adam almost yelled at him, and dragged him off Tommy's bus and over to Adam's own bus and pulled him to the back to his 'lair' as Sasha liked to call it. Thankfully everyone else was off somewhere else, or so it looked when they went through it towards the back.
"So, spill," Adam told him, when he'd sat them both down on his bed. Holy shit, should he come clean now and explain the real reason or keep lying and keep Tommy's secret?
"Just wasn't working anymore. We wanted different things," Kris told him, and had obviously made up his mind.
"And you what, wanted a guy?" Adam looked at him 'you don't exactly sound shocked or anything that a guy asked you'. Kris had started to fidget and play with the hem of his T-shirt a little. Yikes, he needed to get away.
"Not exactly. But I mean, hey there could be worse guys, right? He's kinda hot and I like talking to him. I might take him up on it. You don't leave until day after tomorrow, right?" Kris asked him, smiling and looking like he was actually considering it.
"But... you're straight."
"Bisexual, actually. Just easier to say straight. I know, I know. Totally lame of me." And okay, that was actually kind of true. In college, after he and Katy had broken up, he had kinda experimented a little.
"Right. So, you want to take my bassist, who I thought was straight but is asking my male friends out on dates, up on his offer of a date? Try and say that three times, fast," Adam told him, and it really looked like he was trying to do just that in his head.
"Yup," Kris told him, nodding and not risking adding anything more onto this pile of lies.
"Well, I can't stop you. You're two consenting adults." Adam shrugged his shoulders, and gave him a encouraging semi-smile.
"Great. I'm going to find him, then, and tell him. Not exactly something you can tweet to a person. Imagine the fan reactions," Kris told him, standing up and walking out of the bus in a hurry. He was in deep shit; how was he going to explain this to Katy?
-**-
Kris found Tommy in his bunk on the other bus, after he'd been pointed towards them by Monte who'd just been leaving the bus.
"Okay, so you're going to hate me. But I tried my best and may have just made matters worse," Kris told him.
Tommy sat up the best that he could in his bunk and asked, "What the fuck did you do?"
"Umh, so I wanted to know if he'd date you and asked him. Sadly you were right, but then he asked why I was asking, and I, uh, may have blurted it out that you asked me out."
"What? I mean, you're hot and all, but what? You're married. Why would I ask out a married guy!? He'll think I'm a total sleazebag," Tommy told him, in a angry half-whisper , his brown eyes wide and looking as if he were a puppy that Kris had just kicked.
"No, see I may have told him I'm getting divorced and I told you," Kris told him, rubbing the back of his neck with a sheepish smile on his face. Kris actually looked like a kicked puppy.
"Still, kinda lame. But what did he have to say about it?" Tommy muttered, but was kind of interested in hearing what Adam had to say about it.
"Uh, that we were two consenting adults, and he had nothing against it." And you could feel the shrug that had acompanied that answer from the way Kris told Tommy.
"Oh, really?" Tommy asked him, and looked down at his lap where his hands were with their chipped & sparkly polished fingernails. So, he was right after all. That kinda sucked. He'd held this little spark of hope that he was wrong, and that Adam was actually a little into him like that.
"Yeah, sorry. Should I tell him the truth, or do you want to or come up with some lie as to why we can't go on a date?" Kris asked him, feeling really damn bad now. Katy was going to kick his ass when he told her about this.
"Umh, I'll tell him some lie. Wait here?" Tommy told him, cropping polish off his nails and biting his lower lip in concentration.
"Sure. Good luck. Sorry, I messed things up." It only occurred to Kris afterwards that Tommy lying would mean he had to tell Katy that Adam thought they were getting a divorce. Uh oh.
-*-
"So, did you tell him?" Kris asked Tommy, when he got back half an hour later. The guy didn't look exactly happy or anything, and he was holding a blue cup. Who knew what it was filled with.
"I started to. And it's not his fault, he was super sweet and all, but a stupid part of my brain thought he was like being patronizing or something, asking about like why I asked you out on a date and shit like had I dated a guy before and stuff," Tommy mumbled into his cup, before taking a big sip and sitting down, sulking big time.
"Yeah, and?"
"So, I told him I may not have dated as many guys as him and then told him we were going out later to a bar. I'm so sorry. If you want to come clean now, and all, so your wife won't be too pissed at you, I totally understand." Tommy sighed and looked at Kris, looking truly sorry. Actually he looked a little like a sad lolcat, and really how could Kris not help someone who looks like that?
"We'll have to tell him the truth eventually, or I'll actually have to get a divorce, and I kinda love my wife...But we can do that later; lets go out tonight. Give him something to think about," Kris told him, winking at him with a grin on his lips.
"Okay, okay. I promise not to get fresh on the first date," Tommy told him, with a grin of his own and taking another sip of whatever was in that cup.
"If you do, I'll tell Adam you're a horndog who tried to get in my pants on the first date and not the cuddly cat he thinks you are. Yeah, he's mentioned it," Kris informed him, with glee in his eyes and a groan from Tommy.
"I'm stuck with this cat thing forever now, oh my god. It was bad enough when only fans were calling me that, but now he's picked up on it. Ugh." It's not that he minded the thing too much, but still come on.
"I think it's adorable."
"Okay, to get in a guy's pants don't call them adorable."
"Sorry, I'll shut up now. So, want to leave in half an hour?"
"Sure," Tommy muttered, and finished his cup of whatever. Kris got his phone from his jacket pocket and checked his Twitter again. Just because he didn't tweet a lot, didn't mean he didn't lurk.
-*-
The next day the two of them had horrible hangovers. When they got to the bar Kris had called Katy and explained the whole thing. She had laughed and awwwed. Then she told Kris to help him, but they were not getting divorced for real to keep up the lie, and no sexing the bassist.
After that they just sat around, drinking and talking about music related stuff and such. They might not have a whole lot in common, being from totally different parts of the country, but hey, beer makes everything more easy.
So easy that they seemed to have fallen into Tommy's bunk and fallen asleep there. How two grown men could have fit into that thing is something only drunk people could manage. At least they were fully clothed, but Tommy has a killer hangover which makes him just not function at all.
So that's why when Kris is stepping off the bus early in the morning and bumps into Adam, it's super awkward. One; They're not supposed to have people on the buses, and two; his clothes and such are bit ruffled and he has bedhead so, yeah, you could assume that something happened.
Adam didn't say anything. He just looked Kris over and then looked away until eventually Kris walks away. Kris looked over his shoulder and saw him board the bus, maybe to see how Tommy was or something totally different?
-*-
Kris came back later that night, with Katy in tow, and when Adam saw this, he looked at them all weird. Katy cut in before Kris could really say anything. She explained that they were still good friends, plus, could he imagine the PR horror if people found out already?
Katy went to find them something to drink, and Kris caught Tommy in the dressing room, getting ready. "So, how do you feel?"
"Ugh, like someone's been using my head for a basketball or something. I hate sports," Tommy told him, and leaned against his shoulder for support. Which is obviously the time Adam decided to enter the room. The guy had to be doing this on purpose or something!
He didn't say anything, he just smiled and left again. "He probably thinks we're like secretly dating now, and that we've had sex. Oh, god," Kris said, and sat down with his head in his hands. "Did he talk to you when he got on the bus this morning? I saw him get on when I was leaving. That was the most awkward thing ever, since I was a teenager."
"No, not really. But then I was kinda half out of it. Maybe he asked me if the date was a good one, or something. Mostly he was just talking to Monte about something. I wasn't paying attention," Tommy told him, and punctuated that with another groan.
"Oh, okay. I'm sorry, dude. I've totally screwed stuff up, huh?"
"Well, at least he won't add the straight to 'my bassist' anymore. No, it's okay. You were just trying to help." Shrugging his shoulders, Tommy put on the jacket and messed a little with his hair even though he had been told not to.
"I'm going to go find Katy. Break a leg or whatever tonight," Kris told him, half-smiling and patting him on the shoulder before leaving.
-*-
Katy and Kris found a some time alone and shared a quick kiss. Which obviously Adam witnessed, because he sees everything Kris does these days, damn it! And he did not look pleased.
"I thought you two were getting a divorce, but you're already cheating on Tommy with your soon to be ex? So much for the bisexual bit, huh?" Adam asked Kris, with his arms crossed over his chest and he didn't look like a happy puppy one bit. Which was actually rare these days.
"Umh, wait, we can explain..." Kris started to say, when Katy cut in front of him and stepped up to Adam. For such little, blonde thing she could be a little intimidating when she wanted to be.
"What my husband is trying to say is that you're a blind fool. And that I shouldn't let him go anywhere by himself, because he'll only get himself into trouble trying to help people," Katy explained to Adam, and glanced over her shoulder to her husband who was slumping against a wall.
"Why am I suddenly a blind fool? What did I do?" Adam asked her, pretty much confused as to what was going on right then.
"Tommy has a thing for you! For crying out loud, he tried to ask you out on a date the other day, but you were distracted, and he was nervous, so he chickened out," Katy practically yelled at him, and woah, yeah. She kinda reminded him of a lioness or something, seriously.
"What? But your divorce?" Because hadn't she said they were getting divorced too? Why would both of them lie about that, and what did that have to do with Tommy?
"We're still happily married. But Kris didn't want to spill the beans on Tommy's secret so he just kept spinning this web of lie. We all got caught up in it, but I didn't want to leave with you thinking our marriage was on the rocks," Katy told him, calmed down, and Kris had walked up to her to slide a arm around her waist.
"But..." Adam started, because this was confusing, and he had to be on stage soon. His friends were seriously freaking him out. This was like a soap!
"So let your cute, tiny bassist ask you out on a date and see how it goes. Before the tabloids start thinking there's something going on between my husband and him," Katy told him, and Adam got the feeling he didn't have a choice in the matter of if he did it or not.
"Umh, okay," Adam told Katy, before she turned around and walked away.
"Heh, I love her."
"Yeah, I can see why."
-*-
"So, uh, Katy said that you had something to ask me?" Adam told Tommy, who he had found five minutes after his confrontation with Katy. He had been getting something to drink, holding a red cup this time around.
"Oh, umh. Yeah, maybe. I was just wondering if maybe you wanted to go to dinner one day. Like, just the two of us, no one else. Kinda like maybe, umh, a date?" Tommy fidgeted like crazy and looked at his creepers and nails more than Adam.
"Sure, why not," Adam told him, a smile on his face.
"Really? Great!" Tommy's whole face lit up and he looked like a puppy who just got a juicy steak.
"But right now we gotta go on stage and work for the money that'll pay for that date," Adam told him, winking at him, and Tommy laughed before nodding. So, they didn't know how the date was going to go but it was a start.
Just like when Kris overheard Tommy try to ask Adam out on a date the day before, he overheard the more successful attempt, as well. Smiling to himself, he went to find Katy and to enjoy the show.

The End.
