No one knew what started it, just that those things were in Stilwater and weren’t going away any time soon. Gang hits had been going on as usual, innocent pedestrians being run over like it was any other day, when suddenly they all just wouldn’t stay dead. It wasn’t even a fun kind of not staying dead, like zombies or vampires or something. This was some full-on Victorian shit, an army of ghosts that a spiritualist couldn’t have faked even if Houdini had switched sides and helped him out.
As the streets ran brilliant white with ectoplasm, every fallen citizen being added to the ranks of the marching specters, a wicked trio of criminals watched from the top floor of their gang hideout.
“How many of them do you think I’m responsible for?” asked the Boss. Shaundi took a puff and shrugged.
“Some? I don’t know. Pierce and I saw Veteran Child in the back of the crowd, so that’s at least one.”
“I told you,” sighed Pierce as he took a break from pacing in a panic, “that wasn’t Veteran Child, that was just some white dude in dreads! If I’d seen tits on it, I might have figured it was you.”
“Hey!”
“Just shut up, okay? Both of you!” The two fell silent at the Boss’s words, mostly because it hadn’t been much of an argument anyway. Their fearless leader took Pierce’s place pacing, seemingly stymied by a problem that couldn’t be solved by finding whoever was responsible for it and performing a headshot.
“Anybody seen Johnny?” she asked at last.
“Yeah. He thought he saw his girl in the crowd and ran after her. Hasn’t shown up back at headquarters since.”
“Shit. Hope she doesn’t kill him or anything.” The Boss frowned at the spectacle outside the window. “Wait. I didn’t kill Aisha. That means this isn’t just a mass of people I’ve mowed down on my way to get groceries!”
“Did you think it was?” asked Shaundi. “Not everything has to be about you. No offense.”
“I know, I just kind of hoped it was. It would feel better to get my guts sucked out by a ghost if I knew it was fair.” Suddenly, she bent over and squinted at something in the distance. “Hang on, is that Jessica?”
Pierce came over to her side.
“Might be. Too far away to say for sure.”
“Well, shit. That one isn’t fair! She killed Carlos first!” The Boss turned back to her friends. “What do you think? Can ghosts be killed a second time?”
“I don’t see how-”
“Worth a shot, anyway.” She grabbed her baseball bat and headed downstairs. “If Johnny gets back before me,” the Boss shouted as she opened the door, “Tell him we’ve got to be more careful driving!”
