CHAPTER 1

“Locked in a room with no doors
There’s someone watching me
His steps are closer and closer
But I can’t move

I Wake up with his shouts
In the darkness of this night, I’m the monster that will lure you...”

Monster

His feet move on its own, ignoring any danger around. Likewise, by instinct, his agile body dodged from the cars that stopped, one after another, creating a noisy succession of horns, tires and yells.

The last car he passed by ended up touching his hip, even so, the police officer refused to stop, moved by a strong sense of justice and resentment he was unable to control. He pinfolded the suspect a few minutes later, when he tried to climb a wall of an alley, almost hidden by the buildings around.

Only when he stopped running he realized how exhausted he was. He wiped the sweat from his front with the back of his hand and bended his body, breathing with difficulty.

- Tokyo Police! - he warned, puffing. - You’re under arrest!

Then, he waited.

He wasn’t disappointed when the man reacted. On the contrary, he smiled victoriously at the same time he cleaned the blood that dripped from the corner of his mouth.

His first attack was to immobilize the aggressor. The following ones, to appease the feeling of injustice that was boiling in each cell of his body.

- Ohno-san, you can come in now - said the attendant with a gentle smile.

He returned the greeting with a cheeky wink before entering the clinic.

As soon as he closed the door, Ohno Satoshi took in the details of the environment. Nothing had changed since the last time he was there, three months before. Nor even the unperturbed expression of the therapist, who was analyzing a report behind the stylish glasses, had changed since his last consultation.

- How have you been, Ohno-san? - asked the specialist, in a professional tone.

- Fine - he answered mechanically, before sitting down. Then, without saying another word, he brought his attention to the open window, his eyes focused on that summer afternoon’s blue sky.

- It’s a beautiful day, right? - the therapist followed his stare.

- Is this part of a psychological test? - he tried to accommodate his body in the uncomfortable chair and, for the first time, he faced the man.

- If I say no, will you testify I’m a problematic person, Sensei?

Sakurai Sho fixed his glasses, still hiding his emotions.

- Do you consider yourself problematic?

- Isn’t that what’s written in the report you’re holding? Wasn’t that why I was sent here? Let me guess: abuse? Violence?

- You’ve really knocked the man out... - the therapist confirmed, analyzing the document. - He had four stiches in his left eyebrow and has bruises all over his face.

- He resisted the arrest. He attacked me first. I was just defending myself.

- According to him, he had already surrendered in your first strike.
Satoshi snorted, impatient.

- It’s true I gave one punch or another beyond the necessary, but he wasn’t as defenseless he wants to seem.  How do you think I’ve got this cut? - he pointed to the corner of his mouth. - I did nothing but my duty. I took a vow to protect the citizens and ensure their children’s safety. And this criminal was selling drugs right in front of a High School!

- Ohno-san...

- I know what you’re gonna say, Sensei. But, believe me, I did nothing against the law neither have I abused my police authority.

- The report isn’t formally accusing you of abuse. However, it states that you got yourself involved into a dangerous pursuit: you’ve got your life at risk and nearly caused a traffic accident - the specialist said in a serious voice. - Besides, you know it’s usual to the Police Department to send their officers to a psychologist when there’s any suspicion of behavioral deviation. The suspect is accusing you of violence and, unfortunately, it’s not the first time. The drug dealer you’ve arrested three months ago had a broken arm in the process.

Ohno bit his lips, outraged, remembering the ridiculous episode. The criminal almost got himself free, alleging irregular arrest.

- That guy attacked me with a knife. I had to immobilize him, right?

- If you say so...

- I’m telling you the truth. In both cases, they attacked me first. Besides, both drug dealers are dangerous. This last one was even a fugitive!

- Even so, this intolerance of yours might end up jeopardizing your position. Satoshi… - the man’s hand covered his, in a completely unprofessional gesture. - If you keep on like this, the Internal Affairs will analyze your history and they might consider a reevaluation of your case…

-THEY COULND’T DO THAT!

- They can and they will! You know you’re not totally free of your anxiety crisis. When was the last time you went to the psychiatrist?

- It’s been a while - he admitted. - But I really doesn’t need to go back there. I’m fine, Sho-chan…

The therapist squeezes the police officer’s fingers.

- You don’t have to lie to me. I know you since we were kids. I know you’ve not been the same, since…

- Don’t even go there! - Ohno begged him. - Please, let’s end up this conversation here.

- I can’t, Satoshi. I worry about you! The way you throw yourself into this criminality world, risking your life without considering the consequences, trying to find among these criminals you pursuit the man that killed your dad!

- I’m gonna find him, Sho-chan! - he punched the table, unsettled. - And I don’t care what will take for me to do that! If I might risk my own life to get face to face with him, I’ll do it. If I have to hunt down all those damned drug dealers that dirt the city in order to find him, then I will search for each and every one of them!

Sakurai sighed, concerned, confirming his suspicious. Satoshi has not yet recovered completely from his father’s death. To the sole mention of the event, his behavior changed in a very disturbing way. For just one second, he hesitated. His emotional side would stand up and take his childhood friend in a comforting embrace. His rational one, nonetheless, should be impartial and, at that moment, Satoshi needed more a professional than a friend.

- And how are you going to achieve that if you’re arrested or discharged? - he asked, while scribbling down some words in a piece of paper.
- You’re making an unfavorable report?

- I am - he said, straightforwardly. - If you keep on acting like a suicide maniac.

- I thought you were my friend! - Ohno yelled, enraged.

- Actually, it’s because I’m your best friend I need to protect you from yourself. Listen, Satoshi… I know you feel guilty for what happened to your dad. I know you want to avenge his death, but… you chose the wrong way. Can’t you see you’re maculating the reputation his name brought to the department? Do you really believe that’s how he wanted you to behave when you joined the corporation?

- And what do you know about what I’m going through? About the pain I have to deal with every day? About the burden of being alive when he died in my place?

- It wasn’t your fault.

- You can’t say that, you weren’t there! It wasn’t in your arms he gave his last breath!

- Satoshi...

- Have you finished analyzing my behavior, Sensei? - the tone was cold, when he interrupted him. - Am I free to go? - and even before his friend was able to answer, he was closing the door behind him.

This time, he didn’t smile to the attendant as he always did when saying goodbye.

**********************

That was indeed a very beautiful afternoon. The blue sky, with nearly no clouds, was a perfect scenery for the people walking on the streets. If he had to make it into a painting, it would be an almost poetic landscape.

Ohno Satoshi, however, wasn’t paying any attention to it. If asked, he wouldn’t be able to tell where he was, even if he knew that park since he learned how to walk and would go follow his mom in her house duties as shopping for groceries.

In the same way he sat in the first bench he found, he stayed there, static, for hours. He knew Sho was right; still… his impulse was stronger than his conscience. Besides, he was his best friend! If he couldn’t count on his understanding, to whose arms would he flee when he needed support? It was true he could let out his pain and frustration in a martial arts dojo he used to go with his father since he was a kid. Usually, that’s what he would do when he was to irritated to calm down without any external help. But… that night…

'Is it night already?' - he asked himself, when he finally got back to his senses.

That night, he wanted something more physical… the touch of someone’s skin, perhaps.

He got to a club he would go whenever he wanted an easy lay. Sitting on the counter, he asked the barman for tequila and waited. However, the people who danced in such a suggestive way in the dance floor made him sick more than seduced him.

He closed his eyes, allowing the sound of the loud and bustling music to enter through his ears and dive into his thoughts. It didn’t took him long to feel as if he was mixing himself to the harmony of the instruments and voices, to the crazy but also calming rhythm of the music.
- You might really like this kind of music.

Surely, that was not the lyrics of the song playing right then.

- What? - he asked when he faced the boy that stared at him, with curious eyes, in the next stool.

- Are you that into western music? - he insisted, gulping on his beer. - Since I got to the counter, you have your eyes closed, your head moving to the rhythm as if you were absorbing each accord…

Ohno frowned, trying to figure out what the youngster with bleached hair was trying to say. For how long has he lost track of himself this time?
- I like music, in general - he answered, shrugging and drinking his tequila.

- I know a place where they perform live. I guess you’d like it.

- You’re aiming for the wrong person, kid - he said, impatiently. - I don’t do minors. By the way, how did they let you in?
The other smiled widely, looking even younger.

- People always tell me I look like a kid, but I’ve been doing adult stuff for more than five years, when I came of age.

Ohno looked at him, doubtful, studying his features and his physique. He was a handsome man, and a sexy one, even with that bleached hair that seemed to want to defy the world. If he was telling him the truth, he should be only three years younger than he was. Even then, despite his cheeky tone, his personality seemed too innocent for him to soil it.

- Anyway, I’m not giving myself out in here. I just got curious when I saw you enjoying the music as if you were in a trance and I thought that maybe you appreciated it as much as I do… - the stranger said, looking irritated.

He emptied his beer in one gulp and started going to the dance floor.

Ohno could have let him go, if it wasn’t for an unusual impulse. The words got out of his mouth before he could prevent them:
- This place... with the live performance...  is it too far from here?

The smile he received was certainly not the only one the platinum blonde stranger offered him that night.
