CHAPTER 3
“Are you sure that we need to do this?” Jun asked handing a paper to Masaki. He was analyzing with interest the clothes exposed in a mannequin on the stylist’s office.
“Absolutely!” he answered, leaving the mannequin behind and taking a seat in front of Jun. “Since we are talking business, a contract is important to assure both parts' interests. I cannot afford being fooled.”
“For your knowledge, I am very righteous with my accounts! I would never fail to comply with my word” Jun raised his voice, offended with the comment.
“I believe you. Even so, I would rather put things between us in a clear and straight way” Masaki declared before starting to read the handwritten document. “I, Matsumoto Jun, the contractor, guarantee Aiba Masaki that I will pay the previously agreed amount for the period of one day service…”
Masaki took the pen from Jun's hand and scratched something on the paper.
“What are you doing? Is there something wrong?” asked Jun, taking off the document from the other man’s hands.
Surprised, he noticed that Masaki had changed the period from one day to three weeks.
“I may be in need of money, Matsumoto, but I’m not an opportunist. You are paying me a month salary. In return, I am giving you three weeks of service. I believe that, considering the unusual type of the situation, it is a fair price” he explained, taking the paper back from his contractor’s hands and including further information.
Around ten minutes later, he handed the document back to Jun, already signed. The stylist started reading it aloud, curious.
It is the responsibility of the contracted, within the assigned period, to fulfill the contractor’s requests whenever prompted, provided that it doesn’t interfere with the schedule of his other jobs.
“I work from Monday to Saturday, from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon at Satoshi’s bakery. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, I work as a barman at Firefly, the bar where we met. If you need to schedule any event at night, please do it on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays - unless I can arrive at the venue after midnight, when I leave my job. If you need my services on Sundays or at lunchtime, I am usually free.”
“Please, send me these free hours by e-mail” asked Jun before turning his attention back to the contract.
This contract is effective for three weeks and it is subject to a deadline extension by means of a salary correction to be discussed between the parts.
“This is a good idea, in case I need more time” Jun agreed, wondering why he hadn’t inserted that clause himself.
The agreed amount shall be paid in the following installments: 50% in the moment of the signing and the remaining 50% at the contract expiration.
“I know we haven’t discussed it” Masaki said, feeling a bit ashamed. “However, would you mind giving me an advance payment?”
“No problem.”
Even in case of the contractor’s waiver, the agreed amount shall be paid fully.”
“In case you change your mind and decide to confess the truth to Oguri.”
“This will never happen! I agree to pay as promised, nonetheless, in case our agreement doesn’t work” Jun clarified, taking into consideration the fact that he didn’t know what kind of person he was dealing with.
He turned his eyes back to the document.
All the dating expenses will be exclusively under the contractor’s responsibility.
All kinds of physical interaction are classified as ‘additional services’ and they will be settled aside, at the expiry of the contract.
“Additional services? What do you mean by that?”
“Keep reading, Matsumoto. Everything is detailed below.”
Jun sighed before reading the list. He was suddenly afraid of what he was about to find. Luckily, he decided not to read it aloud, otherwise he might have choked with embarrassment.
He adjusted his body on the chair, bothered, his face becoming flushed as he was reading the rest of the agreement.
Additional services - classified by its level of intimacy and embarrassment.
LEVEL A - Light physical contacts like hugs, caresses, holding hands, friendly kisses and public displays of love, including fluffy nicknames: they are considered unlimited bonus, already part of the agreement.
.
LEVEL B - Medium physical contacts like pecks on the lips, ear bites, lap sitting and such: they are also included in the combo, but with moderate use.
“Why would you believe we will need to exchange ear bites?” asked him Jun, distraught, his face as red as a tomato.
“Only in an absolutely necessary occasion” Masaki answered him calmly. “In case we need to make a more convincing performance.”
Jun smiled with scorn. What was that man thinking? As if he would actually give in to such romantic displays in public…
LEVEL C - Intimate contacts: ONLY IN EMERGENCIES. Kisses in the mouth: 1,000 yen. With the use of tongue: 1,200 yen.
“What? 1,200 yen for a kiss?”
“I have to guarantee my physical integrity. I have no idea of what kind of pervert you are.”
“I am not a maniac, Aiba-san! Besides, this kind of contact will not happen. Even because I am not the one who fancies a public display of affection. That kiss in front of Shun… was it really necessary?”
“He believed in your lie, didn’t he? Besides, you were the one who kissed me first. You may not remember that you attacked me under the shower, but the kiss you gave me was not by far as innocent as my peck in your lips…”
Jun opened his mouth to answer, but he gave up. He really had the feeling of having kissed someone that night, but, according to his memories, it had been Shun. Of course that, due to the circumstances of the day, he decided that it had been nothing more than a dream.
“I don’t know what you are talking about. If I did something, it was alcohol induced.”
“This is precisely why we need a contract. If you can do such thing when you are drunk, I wonder what you are able to do when you are sober…”
“I have told you that you don’t need to worry about this. I won’t touch you.”
“I hope so, Matsumoto. Anyway, will you accept it or not? These are my final conditions.”
“This contract only brings advantages to you…” Jun declared, a bit unwillingly. However, he signed without hesitation below Masaki’s name. The last condition imposed by him was something that also pleased him:
None of the parts is allowed to fall in the love with the other.
That was just a professional relation with no affective bond whatsoever. If it were up to him, he would avoid, for the rest of his life, that thing called love that was making him suffer so badly.
******************************
“Please, Jun, don’t make such a desolate face. Follow Aiba-kun’s example and give me your best smile.”
Jun forced a fake smile, still unable to believe that he had accepted to take part in that ridiculous idea of his friend. He knew he should have never asked Aiba to meet him at Sho’s studio. As soon as his friend saw him, he was delighted:
“You are gorgeous!” Sho said shamelessly as soon as they were introduced. “Have you never considered being a model? You seem so photogenic… May I?” he asked, pointing his camera at Masaki and shooting before waiting for the man’s agreement. “As I thought… You were born to be photographed, Aiba-kun."
“Do you think so?” Masaki asked with interest, while admiring the picture Sho had just taken.
“I am sure! Oh! I had an excellent idea!” Sho shouted out of a sudden. “Wouldn’t it be interesting if Shun and his fiancée found a frame strategically positioned on your coffee table with a picture of you and Aiba seeming madly in love, Jun?”
“Eh? We don’t need to go that far…”
“Come on, get closer to each other!” Sho ignored him, starting to shoot. “Please, Jun, don’t make such a desolate face,” he said impatiently. “Follow Aiba-kun’s example and give me your best smile.”
“Come on, Jun… It won’t hurt to give us a smile, right?” Masaki intervened. “Thinking about it now, it will be my first time seeing a smile in my boyfriend’s face. Please?”
Jun stared at the pleading eyes and, at that very moment, he realized that, if he wasn’t careful, he could easily get himself lost in them. In spite of the insane situation, he mirrored his boyfriend and gave him his best smile, remembering his modeling days. It was just a fake pose after all and, the sooner he let Sho satisfied, the less embarrassed he would have to feel.
****************************************
In the following day, Masaki showed up in his house at the scheduled time, two hours before the guests arrived.
“Am I presentable?” he asked him, following the host to the kitchen.
Jun looked at him from top to bottom with an analytic expression.
“Half of your outfit is made of very used brand items and the other half of retails available to C class,” he said with honesty.
“Nonetheless, you have an amazing fashion sense and you are amazing in jeans. You look just astonishing, Aiba-san.”
His rental boyfriend smiled with relief.
“Really? Phew! For a moment, I felt a bit unsure, not knowing if I was fit to be a stylist's boyfriend. Thank you, Jun-chan! It’s the first time you make me a compliment, you know?”
“Don’t get too used to it. Did you memorize the profile I have sent you?” Jun changed the topic.
“Of course! Matsumoto Jun, born in August 30, 1983. Graduated in Fashion at the Bunka Fashion College, located in Tokyo and considered the third better fashion school in the whole world. You worked as a model from 16 to 24 years old and, when you were 25, you created your own brand, the W/ME. Your favorite colors are…”
“Ok, Aiba-san. It seems that you studied it well. Now, the information you sent me about you are too concise, don’t you think? Just your name and your birth date…”
“What else do you need? You already know that I work in two jobs and that my favorite food is Chinese… It seems enough to me.”
“What about your family? Why are you so in need of money? Where do you live? Do you have no goal in life?"
“I don’t know why you need to know these useless things about me, but I let you take me home later if you insist in getting to know my address. And, please, stop using 'san' to address me. We are lovers, right? In order to be convincing we need to show them we are intimate.”
“You are right, Masaki-chan” Jun said, testing the sound of the honorific. He liked it; it matched the joyful spirit of his boyfriend.
“Well, now that we know enough about each other, do you need any help?”
“You know how to cook?”
“I know my way around the kitchen, once I’ve been living alone since I was seventeen. However, I don’t know how to make fancy dishes as the one you seem to be preparing” Masaki assumed for the amount of ingredients aligned over the counter.
“It’s nothing fancy. I like cooking and testing new recipes. Nothing too problematic, though. My schedule is too hectic for me to lose my precious time in the kitchen. I’ll just make a Caprese Salad and a Seafood Fettucine, Shun’s favorite…”
“It still hurts a lot, doesn’t it?” Masaki asked when Jun suddenly stopped talking, his eyes lost as if remembering something.
“Can we just not talk about this?”
“As you wish, Jun-chan” Masaki said, in support, even though he still couldn’t understand how could the stylist be taking that situation to the end. Was he some kind of masochist?
“Thank you. Well, could you please clean the shrimps for me?”
********************************************
“So?” Jun asked anxiously while he watched his boyfriend enjoying the main dish.
“Why don’t you say for yourself?” Masaki replied, unceremoniously placing a bit of the pasta inside his mouth with the fork he had just used.
Caught by surprise, Jun tasted the meal without the courage to face his guest. What Shun would think of those moments of public romantic expressions? He should talk to Masaki later so they could avoid exaggerations.
“It’s perfect! Just as expected from you, Jun” Shun anticipated with an honest smile.
“Thank you, Shun. I didn't make it all alone, though. Masaki helped me a lot.”
“Congratulations to you both. Everything is delicious” Mayumi confirmed. “Shun had told me that you were a huge fan of Italian food, Matsumoto-san, but I confess that I wasn’t expecting you to be almost a professional.”
“You are being too kind, Hara-san. I just like cooking.”
“Well, I am horrible at the kitchen” she said. “Apart from a few trivial dishes, I can’t do much else.”
“Your ramen is delicious, honey” Shun said, holding his fiancée’s hand and taking to his lips.
Masaki noticed when Jun looked away from the scene, gulping in one sip the glass of wine he took from his front.
“The wine you brought is wonderful, Oguri-san” he said, trying to break the ice.
“It’s Jun’s favorite” Shun said in response. “By the way, he told me you are a barman…”
“Yes. I work as a barman thrice a week at the Firefly.”
“It seems to be an entertaining job. You must get to know all kind of people.”
“Yes. That’s where I’ve met Jun” he tenderly held his boyfriend’s hand over the table.
“You weren’t at service that night, however” Jun said, turning to him. “You were playing sax on Nino’s band. I’ve never heard such a beautiful sound…”
Masaki stared at him with surprise. He suddenly felt his heart warming up. Even though he was suffering from a major heartbreak, Jun had noticed him?
“You are very skillful, baby. Which reminds me that I want to watch you performing once again.”
“If you allow me to say” Mayumi interrupted them with a smile, “you two make a perfect couple. Isn’t it, Shun?”
“Huh?” Shun asked her in confusion, as if he had been pulled back of a trance.
“I can be honest, right?” she proceeded. “When Shun told me he had scheduled this dinner, I was a bit apprehensive. I am a bit possessive and considering the way he talks about Matsumoto-san… I know he had been involved with men before and I confess that I believed that you two could be more than friends.”
“I told you this was nonsense, dear. As I said, Jun and I had a quick involvement in the past, but we have been great friends for a long time now. Isn’t it, Jun?”
“Very quick…” the stylist repeated. Only for two years, he thought with irony and hurt. “Don’t worry, Hara-san. What Shun and I had meant nothing. I… I will bring the dessert.”
He stood up fast before they managed to see his teary eyes. Blinking successively in order to control the damn tears, he opened the freezer to get the ice cream that would be served with the petit gateau. He didn't managed to do so, though. Feeling his legs faltering, he leaned on the fridge for support.
“Jun…”
“Could you bring me the dessert dishes from that cupboard?” he asked with a fake smile, pretending to be fine. He took the ice cream from the freezer and opened the lid.
“Jun…”
“Don’t say a word, Masaki…”
Masaki handed him the dishes, respecting his request to remain silent. However, when he noticed the shaking hands making an awkward ball of ice cream, he was unable to hold his worry anymore. Positioning himself behind his boyfriend, he enveloped his waist.
Maybe because the heat of the body behind him was cozy, maybe because he just needed a friendly shoulder, Jun turned around in the man’s arms, accepting his protective embrace.
Just a minute.
All he needed was to stay quiet like that for one minute…
Nonetheless, he didn’t remain static for too long, because soon he felt his own mouth following the rhythm of Masaki’s lips; their tongues caressing each other slow and sensually in a tender kiss. He closed his eyes, allowing his tears to come and, for a moment, he forgot that there were two other people in the house.
When the kiss ended, he saw Masaki smiling.
“I think Oguri will not want the dessert.”
Jun looked at the kitchen’s door.
“He saw us?” he asked him, annoyed. Then, this was the reason why Masaki had kissed him so suddenly? For a minute, he had believed that… Why was he feeling so frustrated after all?
“Don’t worry” his fake boyfriend whispered at his ear after a nod. “This kiss I will not charge.”
