Took the children out of school today to listen to Terry Pratchett talk about, then sign, his books. My girl likes his stuff, as does her father who does a wonderful job reading Wee Free Men aloud ( Read more... )

I met him at a book signing in Southampton...Johnny and the Dead. Came over as very nice indeed. I remember telling him how I'd read the original edition of The Carpet People but it'd been stolen from the library because it was so valuable/collectable, by some selfish git. Grr.

Not too sure about the collectability of The Carpet People but apparently some of his early US publications would be worth checking out just for fun -- I can't remember if it's Pyramids or Small Gods or what, but the publisher got his name wrong!
He's got a better US publisher now but they were still paranoid over the language in Wee Free Men, had to ensure
that 'crivens' wasn't swearing. When I think of the stuff that's put out by US TV, movies and music and the truly appalling language contained therein... The mind boggles!

Not collectable? You're kidding me, right? They go for a thousand dollars or so. I don't mean the revised one that came out in the 1990s, I mean the original 1970's one.

Ouch!
I've only seen the more recent pb edition, the original sounds nice but I doubt I'll see it at over $1500!!
Plus, that much money buys so many more books, and perhaps the new shelves we need (the Family room is divided by libary-type stalls). It's like making the choice between travelling Business Class or staying a week longer...
