Does google redirect to ads when you search for things? If it does you might have this particularly hard-to-get-rid of spyware thing which can be killed with this awesome application called CWshredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html It kept coming back until I used that.
If it's something less bad you might be able to get rid of it with Ad Aware, which is free. There are also some others...
P.S. You can get these things without downloading or opening files (why do I feel like a sex-ed teacher when I say that?). There are computers waiting across the network to infect you. I have a personal firewall called zone alarm (free) that helps protect against this kind of thing, but it can be a pain because when you first install it, it keeps asking which programs are allowed to accesst the internet (like your web browsers). I still got a worm when I was using that, and I think the reason is that Zone Alarm doesn't load until I log in to windows, but my computer might be connected to the internet beforehand. OK, this is way too long, shouldn't have had that venti cafe au lait a few hours ago.
oh my gosh. you are so generous and computer-literate and brilliant and pretty. !! i am going to download the stuff you recommended - i'll work on it tomorrow afternoon. at the moment i have AOL open and almost at full speed on my machine. ::crosses fingers:: i think you hit the nail on the head with the re-directing worm. i often have to hit the back button in my browser because i've been directed to http://ads.dealhelper.com/ifuckinghatethiswebsite...yadayadayada
