So I recently learned about this guy named Rob Bell. He's a Christian pastor who was recently in the news for suggesting in a book that Hell wasn't a place you go to rot and suffer after you die, but instead a state of being when you live in a way devoted to addiction, selfishness, and anything else that separates you from your fellow man.

There is a passage of Christian Sacred Scripture in which Christ is supposed to have said, "No one comes to the Father except through Me." De Mello thought about that English preposition "through" for a long time and realized that it can have a legal-contractual meaning, a biological meaning (suggesting a physical in-grafting, by means of the "Real Presence" in the orthodox Holy Communion), and even a prayerful-mystical meaning.
So De Mello went and looked at the Aramaic that Christ is supposed actually to have spoken; there is not an exactly equivalent preposition for all of those meanings in English, taken together.
His final conclusion? What De Mello thinks that Jesus Christ ACTUALLY said is, No one comes to the Father except by being Me"--being having the sense of BECOMING.Meditate on that for a ( ... )
