If you are a traveling to Europe and considering getting one of these debit cards to make life easier for you while there, my advice is don't! Figure out which of your credit cards charges the least amount of fees for international usage and just use it.

Visa is even better than MasterCard. I remember being in Ivoty coast and only finding shops and ATM only accepting visa.

Paying in Europe ext_182114 September 25 2009, 11:13:55 UTC
Being a European and spending my time in this continent, I have to agree.

For Payment around here, the most important thing still is hard cash. Believe it or not, having real Euros in your pocket is very important. ATM cards with the "Maestro" system work in most shops, but not sure if you have special fees on them when coming from overseas. VISA or MasterCard credit cards can be used in very many places nowadays, but don't expect them to work in every shop - when I recently bought my washing machine in a rather large store, they only took ATM or hard money, for example.

I just use my regular ATM card for cash withdrawal. It has a "plus" logo and believe it or not it accepted in more ATM in Europe than VISA or MasterCard in ATM in Canada. But maybe the banking system in the US is worse that I can imagine.

For the rest, VISA, MasterCard or Amex (if you want to be sure, have all three)

I will not use Travelex cashpassport again. There have been many times when I was charged fees when I didn't expect to. Also many transactions went through two currency conversions when none was needed. Also, they have been sitting
on my last transfer into the account for three days. I rang them and the auto answer told
me to call again later and disconnected. They are a rip off.

Use Chase ATMs and there is no withdrawal fee from Chase, regardless of amount. With no fee either from Travelex, you get your cash for free.

Just a heads-up.
