I think he was worried about the vapid people who read his stuff and tried to talk to him about it. I've never read his work due to a lack of interest.
Good point, but maybe if he hadn't made such a big honking reclusive mystery of himself, he might not have had that problem. I myself think he was VASTLY overrated as a writer, and found him both precious and pretentious.
I've met Billy Corgan. He struck me as very much like me, it weirded me out. He was EXACTLY like how I thought he'd be. I was like, damn, I'm good. He was a very nice person, really got along well with him, although didn't have as much of an interaction with him as I had wanted. Met Tori Amos too, she was very cool and very nice, polite, friendly, quirky and funny.

And I've never understood why any writer, or indeed any human being, would want to be like Jerry Salinger. Where's the fun in that??
