the bible....a few questions

Jul 26, 2004 00:03

So earlier this summer I was in a theology course (the 200 level at xavier) and the teacher struck me with some interesting ideas. So I believe that the Bible isn't infallible (i.e. there are inaccuracies in it) but my teacher pointed out that most of the Bible could potentially be untrue. I had never really thought that the Bible could've been ( Read more... )

Well, my first thought on this is to remember that the Bible was written by humans, so of course there are going to be parts of it that will suck. It's in our nature to do so. :-P And I'm pretty sure it's practically an established fact that the gospels were written well after Jesus' death and rising, implying a late publication of the Bible. At least that's what I've been taught.

And finally, we Catholics also believe that the writers of the Bible were inspired by God, and thus were capable of writing what they wrote. The probably had no idea what Jesus meant, but something within them was dying to get out and share whatever experience they had seen or heard of about this Jesus with the rest of the world, and thus put down their thoughts as their heart and soul saw to it ( ... )

let me play the Devil's advocate here for a second. So the Bible Writers lied about the miracles (except the Resurrection, of course). Who's to say that they didn't make up everything else? We know Jesus was a man who lived on Earth, but who's to say that he believed all those things? Who's to say that Jesus wanted us to "love our neighbor" and such? I mean, I believe he did, but there is that other option....... Anyway, just a thought. Its like the deniers of the Holocaust argument, how the Jews might have made up the whole story (even though they didn't).

First off I would argue that we're not really supposed to know for sure if the Gospel writers made all that stuff up. That's the point of Faith, isn't it?

Secondly, there are MULTITUDES of evidence from sources OTHER than the Bible, documenting Jesus and his life. Honestly, if we had one measly book (The Bible) on which we based an entire religion (dozens of religions!) off of...don't you think that seems kinda thin? Only one publication out there that supports all these relgions and their beliefs? There are TONS of other sources out there that document Jesus and the events that transpired in his life, so it can't just be coincidence that so many of those stories coincide.

ah, convergence of evidence, I love it. Good point. Yes, the whole point of faith is to believe in something that we can't prove, I have to agree.
