In an attempt to spark interest in this blog, not necessarily from those reading it but mostly from myself, I've decided to do something here I haven't done in quite a while; jabber on about a movie
( Read more... )
I actually have been hearing a lot about this, cuz I follow random sci-fi/horror/movies-in-general blogs and they're all over this. I'd totally see it if I wasn't so squeamish, because it sounds like it could actually be pretty deep. Also, Willem Dafoe is my faaaaaaaaaaave. Ever. Omg <3
Its playing at the Landmark so you could always head over to see it if you wanted. Willem Dafoe is fucking awesome in it of course. If you do end up seeing it just know what your getting yourself into first.
I've seen a couple of other Lars Von Trier films- "Dancer in the dark" and "Breaking the Waves"--- fascinating how he can manipulate an audience's emotions and pull them into an emotional hell, along with his characters....but at this point I wonder- is he actually taking the audience anywhere with his newest film, or is it just a descent into psychological hell by the end?
I wouldn't call him lazy, but one critic mentioned films that were disturbing and those that were moving, because the audience would actually be taken to a new perspective on life by the end. I'm split on seeing this- Does this one offer ANYTHING else besides hell?
You make a valid point, and honestly I found that I didn't see much aside from the pit of psychological hell the movie tumbled into by the end. While it might be somewhat subjective to the person watching the film and how they are effected by the misogynistic and religious aspects of it, I honestly didn't take anything new away from it.
While I can appreciate many aspects of it I certainly can't say the film is sublime. At the very least its a refreshing approach to the same cookie cutter horror films that have dominated the mainstream in the last few years.
