Salon has re-broken the story on how the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans fabricated intelligence on WMD to mislead the nation into going to war in Iraq. I wonder if the rest of the media will finally pick up this story

If Saudi Arabia went democratic, they would probably quickly devolve into a fundamentalist theocracy pretty quickly. Democracy does not always imply western-style liberty. At the risk of invoking Goodwin's Law, I must point out that Germany was a democracy in 1932. As evil as Saddam was, Iraq was not a sponsor of terrorism. I have little hope that a future, "democratic" Iraq would be so circumspect.
So, given the thesis of that article, making sure Iraq's new democracy is robust and broadly based is critical to its stability. On the other hand, we'll have military bases in Iraq for the next 50 years. When a president comes to power in Iraq that our gubment doesn't like, there will be a "popular" uprising and Iraq's president will "voluntarily" leave the country for a vacation in Africa.
Well, the other point in the article was that there was no democratic tradition among the populace. Living in an autocratic satellite of what is, essentially, and empire does nothing to foster that. Also, military empires are soooo last century.

My fault. Replace all references to military/government with Halliburton. :)
