If the tables were turned...

During the RNC, Dick Cheney made some biting remarks which stung at John Kerry's voting record. For example, Cheney said, "During the 1980s, Senator Kerry opposed Ronald Reagan's major defense initiatives that brought victory in the Cold War." However, Kerry had only voted against some of the many, many weapons systems bills that went through ( Read more... )

Dick Cheney, like the Taliban, opposes women's rights. Dick Cheney voted against the Equal Rights Amendment in 1983.

Is there other evidence that Cheney opposes women's rights other than this vote? Perhaps he didn't like the amendment for other reasons than what it would do for women's rights?

Dick Cheney hates poor children and wants them to be left behind. He voted against funding Head Start, and he voted against creating the Department of Education.I must admit ignorance about whether Cheney is one of those big-government Republicans or small-government Republicans, but this is how a Libertarian would have voted, and that Libertarian would not necessarily have wanted children to fail to be educated or for poor children to be left behind. A Libertarian might believe that the more government-run education is, the lower quality and deterrent of actual learning it is. A Libertarian would also believe that educating poor children is the responsibility of citizens (i.e. voluntarism, charity) and not the responsibility of government ( ... )

I don't believe any of those points about Dick Cheney. In fact, I know he had a principled reason for not voting for the Equal Rights Amendment - he didn't think the constitution needed to be amended to say that Group X should be treated fairly. After all if you did amended the constitution to say Group X should be treated fairly, then you might have to amend it to say Group Y should be treated fairly too.

I was just trying to turn the rhetorical tables on Cheney who was being a dick about Kerry's voting record. Cheney has been using fear mongering rhetorical tactics against Kerry. Today, in fact, Cheney blatantly stated that there would be another terrorist attack if Kerry won the election... All I'm saying is that Cheney is dragging down the political debate to a fear mongering level and *that* really pisses me off...

That does sound kind of churlish. Sorry for not getting the point.

Though I'm surprised that he would say that there would be another terrorist attach IF Kerry won the election. I would think that, based on the recent Russian school incident for example, that we're a target for the terrorists no matter who's president. The question is how we would prepare for it and/or deal with it, I would think.

Also, Kery's recent "W stands for WRONG!" thing seems to be sort of kindergarden-level. Maybe that's better than fear-mongering, I dunno.
