I realized a long time ago that it's not who goes, but WHY you go. I don't go to be hit on, to find a future mate, or to do anything other than have fun and be entertained. I had my spurt of going every weekend one summer. I had a blast with my friends and that was quite enough. Now I'm lucky to make it two or three times a year. But I always have fun when I go because it's not about the other people at all.
Not to sound incredibly overly-negative or even condescending, but I've always felt that the bar scene was a very big hinderance on the gay community as a whole. Folks are no longer hiding behind closet doors, but now they're behind bar room doors. It's not in there that we will find equality or better ourselves. The bar is not a place where you can discuss... well, anything except the things that you mentioned. It's a different social order altogether -- and it's, in many ways, removed from reality. Maybe that's why some people prefer it in the first place
