I have a friend, let’s call her by code-name Z, whom I adore yet make fun of incessantly. She’s a delightful and very nice young lady, but has this tendency to enjoy activities and items that one would enjoy if they were, say, a stereotypical lady-lover. I think it's more of an aesthetic thing than internalized homophobia. You were raised to appreciate beautiful and elegant things. An unshaved leg ruins the smooth lines, etc. Comfortable footwear that would be equally at home on a hike is not an accessory that makes the foot more appealing.
