You can't control people's beliefs. Don't beat yourself up for that. There are some people that are so strong in their beliefs that they don't want to be around someone who feels differently. Religion is surely one of those topics. There ate some things that just can't be put aside for friendship, much like in any relationship. I would not be able to be friends with someone that advocated something I felt like was morally wrong, and in this case, that's how that person felt. So don't beat yourself up over that

Well, for one thing, I didn't approach religion at all. And I listened to the guy for almost 10 minutes doing my best to not to talk about it.
It wasn't about reading someone. Religion had never come up before in past conversations, and he wasn't the type to talk about it either that I saw.
Sure I could lie and pretend to go along with him. If it was just a prayer that would be one thing. I have no problem with that. But this was well beyond that: hard core proslytizing. I'm better off with the guy elsewhere and other than feeling dirty afterwards, have no problems saying bon voyage.
