I know I'm in trouble in my class when I'm like, "Oh good god, I don't want to teach this lesson..." I'm kinda stuck in it, but I should have finished this whole unit before Spring Break. Oh well. I guess it's a matter of principle now to finish it ( Read more... )

I'm teaching English to 9th graders at this new school. I got to write the proposal for the school and everything. So this is the end of our very first year. It's so exciting. I love my school. A lot. It's a great place, and I get to do pretty much anything I want there. I love getting paid to do awesome things. I'm writing these evaluations right now. I'm trying to have fewer grades. I don't like grades. Did you know that grades were first used in 1790? Before that people just discussed learning. It wasn't quanitifed.

I heard that your ferret died... I'm really sorry to hear that. Losing a pet is awful. How are you doing?

Now I'm doing okay. I still miss him a lot, and occassionally I'll come across things of his (like a favorite treat he stashed in the apartment, etc.) that transport me momentarily to how I felt right after he died. That may not ever go away, but such is the way of emotions. But generally, after a day or so of adapting to the raw emotional response, I felt okay. Getting to a point where I don't think "I can't believe he's gone" is a whole other matter, and nothing but time can change that I suspect.

Relatedly, you will be interested in this post that I just put up.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying yourself. I recalled you wrote the proposal for your school, but not that you were teaching 9th graders or English. I think that's a great age to teach, because the students are capable, yet still at a point where a good teacher can have a very huge impact. I think the further from 9th/10th grade they get the more difficult it is to have a positive (and perhaps negative) impact as a teacher.
