i almost called you earlier today but then i figured you would be with your family. i keep forgetting it's easter.

i was thinking about you this afternoon because i finished a wonderful book, which you must read, and it talks about the desert. plus it has this great part about tortoises (aka a weird animal). oh, the book is 'a field guide to getting lost' by rebecca solnit. it made me miss you and wish we were on a trip to the desert together.

oh shit! i figured you'd still be in portland... oh well, easter isn't a big deal holiday right? the good news is that THE NEXT TIME YOU HEAR FROM ME I'LL HAVE SEEN THE NEW TSAI MING-LIANG.

never heard of the book, looking into it, thanks!

as for trips to the desert, it's never to late to join me in my on-going fantasy of going to mexico city this summer. tix are super cheap! i need to talk someone into coming along with me...

man, i'm jealous about the tsai. at least i got to spend two nights (!) asking Apichatpong Weerasethakul questions! so good! i also saw Blissfully Yours which you absolutely must see! it is amazing and is meant to be a sort of beginning to Tropical Malady and Syndromes of a ...

i though Mexico City was last year's plan. i might actually think about it. when are you trying to go? we should talk on el telephono.
si?

mexico city is every year's plan, apparently danschank April 9 2007, 18:19:18 UTC
my little sis might do a study abroad this summer in india, so i debated that, but flights would be like 1100 bucks. mexico city is just a good mix of an affordable flight and an experience that seems as if it would be radically different from my day to day routine. yeah, keep it in mind! i'm also trying to talk gabe into it, and maybe nate and his new girlfriend (who is awesome and apparently speaks spanish)... no one is super fired up about the idea though but me.

i almost bought blissfully yours from ebay ir something... maybe one of these days. i keep holding out for an official release. also, i might try to see woman on the beach too (new hong sang soo) if the painting is coming along by that point. at the moment i'm WAAAY behind.

this message is like a real email.

i've always gotten along with my outside of immediate family mistercreepy April 9 2007, 02:33:49 UTC
my cousins swore when we were 16 that we weren't going to be like our parents when we grew up, fighting over really stupid shit

i had to laugh b/c i'm pretty sure we're gonna be the inverse. as we get older, our little foibles that bother each other will become more apparent when games of sardines and other fun adventures no longer cover them.

i guess i'm not really that close to any of my extended family? but lately, i don't feel, like, distant from them either... i'm not sure if i'm describing this correctly. maybe it's like seeing these people a half dozen times a year seems the right amount, and everyone's in general agreement about it? i mean that in the least cold way possible.

i think i've always sorta felt like the weirdo of my family. and i am, but it matters less and less anymore. i think the more comfortable i become with being my usual weirdo self, the less unsettling it becomes to everyone around me.

i love that you post on every holiday/i hate that you don't post on Jewish or British holidays mistercreepy April 9 2007, 04:09:08 UTC
I have sort of a weird relationship with my extended family because while I don't see them that often, my dad's side of the family has this huge family house from ages ago in Canada, and everyone from that side of the family would try to come up every other year, and we'd spend 2-3 weeks together there. So it was sorta like family camp, and I guess sibling like bonds were developed even though sometimes we wouldn't see each other again for another 2 years.

My cousin used to be the weirdo, but I'm pretty sure the longer I stick with this whole film thing, the more I'm going to be the outcast.

He's got a job with IBM.

i only post on holidays i celebrate...

then again, i wouldn't say i exactly celebrate valentine's day. unless you count laying in the bubble bath, eating a tub of ice cream and listening to dashboard confessional at full blast.

(kidding)

(i would never listen to dashboard confessional)

HAPPY PASSOVER ROOOOOOBBBBZZZZ$$$$$!!!! MOZOL-TOFFF!

(i don't know how to spell that)

feh...i avoid family gatherings...BECAUSE of the fact i still get the laundry list of questions regarding: relationships (or lack of one), employment (or the lack of high pay and social prestige), and....relationships (again...). oh yeah...and 'what kind of art do you do, again?... what's that mean? can you paint me a picture for my dining room? something like The Last Supper, y'know?'

sheesh...

yeah, the "relationship" question certainly doesn't get any easier once we hit "the marryin' age"... fortunately my family knows full and well how bleak the prospects of such a thing happening in my life have become, for better or worse. tonight, my aunt made a joke about me getting married and i replied that i "wasn't even out of the dugout yet", which got a good laugh, and effectively ended the inquiry...

i dunno, the only thing i can say, i guess, is that i try to talk about things people want to talk about-- get people onto a subject they ACTUALLY enjoy rather than feel obligated to bring up. and it's not just me pulling the strings. i think something has set in among my family where we all just wanna shoot the shit at this point.
