well, it's been a busy couple of weeks in danschank land... i thought i'd be more motivated for updates, but instead i've basically been doing a lot of hanging out... nonetheless, the summer edition is finally here:
have you tried reading melville's short stories and essays? i have a collection of those and i find his island lore fascinating. supposedly his other novels are even MORE difficult than moby dick. i have read bits of moby dick but never the whole thing straight through.
his essays are nice and short. very pretty descriptions of islands and old sea tales. much easier than moby dick, don't worry. though, i understand if you need to take a break. after i took a russian literature class in college, i think i only read crappy fantasy novels for about 2 months afterwards. i was that worn out by all the DRAMA.
you didn't use enough capslocks, or adopt the writing equivalent of "flailing wildly." hee.
I disagree with Bill Mahar about a lot of things (Ann Coulter and Religion being two examples off the top of my head), but I'll still try and check out his documentary on the latter topic when it comes out. He's an interesting speaker, and I strongly agree with some of his positions, such as the attention that should be paid to suffering of animals, etc.
you know, the whole ann coulter thing has come up with him recently (i've seriously been youtubing his show non-stop), and it's weird. they werec lose friends i guess, and i've read rumors that they once dated (i think they might have been at cornell at the same time?)... but he's been really distancing himself from her lately. he was on some show talking about her calling johnedwards a faggot, and he came down pretty hard on her, and said they hadn't spoken to each other in months. then again, he used to come down hard on her in the politically incorrect days (and vice versa). i like that he be-friends people he disagrees with. you NEVER see that in american political debate anymore

Yeah--Hell, if I only made friends with people I agreed with about stuff, I'd have, uh, wait....yeah, I'd have even less friends than I do now! I think one of the differences between Canada and the United States, in a lot of ways, is the general approach to Christianity (even though a majority in both countries would probably qualify as Xian). And he seems, uh, a bit more relaxed and less-frustrated with religion, than, say, Christopher Hitchens. Nyuck Nyuck.
I guess that's my way of saying if I were an atheist involved in American Civic Life, I'd probably be a bit bonkers from dealing with it all, too.
really diggin' those quotes you just posteddanschankJuly 26 2007, 22:46:46 UTC
"even damnation is poisoned with rainbows" used to be the, um, "subtitle" of my journal (now it's "dan schank decorates his brain"). i also suggested it to my uncle for an anthology he just finished of aphorisms, and i think he actually used it! (the book isn't out yet, so i don't know for sure)
also, if you revisit the bill maher portion of this post, click on the hyperlink over "opportunistic baloney"... we're on the same page my friend...
i feel ike i should know this...erin_lindsayJuly 26 2007, 16:16:41 UTC
but, did you watch the new tsai ming-liang yet?
i too appreciate when books/film depict male hetero friendship. i feel like it is so rarely addressed. men can be close and affectionate, it's ok! this is just a symptom of society's fear of expressing love i think. women have it a little easier since we are the 'emotional' ones but it effects us nonetheless. i'm totally off on a tangent now... but people, tell someone you love them and give 'em a kiss on the cheek!
so dan, i love you but i don't understand why you like kung fu so much.
i don't know why i love kung fu so much either, but i dooooooooo!!!!! \m/
you should definitely check out that album; it's totally great. people from that band also had a band called ithaca, which is good too. ithaca is a little trippier/proggier i guess. longer songs with more parts. apparently there's another offshoot called "friends" too, hahaha... a band called friends. haven't heard that one yet.
