...Uh, Dante, there's still going to be a non-confidence vote. There hasn't been a "coup." All that's happened so far is the coalition has been made official.

Well, yeah, it's a non-confidence vote, but the standard procedure with one of those is that the government falls, there's an election. What makes this a "coup", a seizing of power, is that the coalition is suggesting that it be instated directly into power, sans election. The NDP would have six seats in the cabinet, the Liberals would have the finance minister and most of the power, and the Bloc Quebecois would simply by there on the side, automatically ratifying Throne Speech and budgets, but able to vote freely and thus veto everything else, if it so chooses.
It's all up to the governor-general, now - she can instate this coalition government, or she can go with what Harper's probably suggestion will be, if he's smart - prologuing parliment until January, with a new budget, and -then- see if the opposition still wants their non-confidence vote.

I haven't tracked down sources yet, but from what I've been hearing, this coalition isn't illegal, and neither are its proposed activities. I'll need to find someplace to confirm it, but I think calling it a "coup" is getting a little carried away.

I haven't read enough to form a solid opinion on the situation yet, but I can see why the coalition wants to bypass an election (and not just because they might not win). I mean, spending another $300 million on a second pointless election in a time of economic crisis? Bad move for everyone.

Oh, no, it's not illegal, and neither is seizing power from the government - it's just idiotic and probably not what's best for the people ( ... )

That´s... weird. And here I was, thinking about how peaceful things are in Canada. At least people aren´t shooting anybody (that´s kinda how we solve this things here in South America).

Still... weird.

In a sense, I'm glad we're not the only ones going through retarded drama... But I am sorry this is happening in your country.
