A long time ago Dan’s father, Go Hibiki, fought Fagot Sagat and ripped one of his eyes out. Apparently Sagat didn’t exactly like this and killed his father in return. Dan swore revenge on his father’s death and began to learn how to fight in hopes of challenging Sagat again to avenge his father in a fair fight. He sought training at Gouken’s dojo, the same place that Ryu and Ken was taught. Unfortunately his real motivation for learning to fight was discovered and he was expelled from the dojo. And thus Dan developed his own fighting style called the Saikyo style which translates to “The Strongest Style”. This is obviously not true and is “Strongest” in name only.
Dan originally wanted to be in Street Fighter II tourney, but it was revealed later that he forgot to pay his phone bill and thus when Blanka called him about it, it didn’t get through. But Dan managed to participate in the next tournament (Street Fighter Alpha) and the one after that (Street Fighter Alpha II).
In Street Fighter Alpha II Dan is challenged by Guy, a fighter who, like Dan, wants to become the strongest. They fight (Dan kicking his ASS obv) and later Dan finally gets the chance to live out his dream: to avenge his father’s death. He runs into Saggy tits Sagat and challenges him to a match. Sagat felt bad for what he had done and decides to let Dan win the fight. But Dan is so full of himself, he doesn’t realize he had just won a thrown match and screams to the heavens to his father about how he’s the strongest and that he avenged his death.
He lets this go to his head so bad that he ends up opening up his own Dojo in Hong Kong to teach it to others who wish to learn the Saikyo style. Dan decides that he needs a pupil though. Someone who was weaker than him, and suitable as his first apprentice. And that’s when he thought up the perfect person. He decides on Sakura, a 16 year old martial artist high school student who happens to be quite the talk of the town. And so he sets out to make her his apprentice. Eventually he manages to obtain her apprenticeship, and for awhile, everything worked out great.
But just three days later he receives a letter from Sakura stating she has already mastered everything that he has to teach her, and despite that, she decides to disregard all of what she learned. Saying that all his moves look retarded, and are completely useless in a fight.
Later on Dan decides that having his own dojo and the avenging of his fathers death wasn’t enough for him. He wanted perfection. And that’s what causes him to enter yet another tournament and in this one, he is accused of being part of the Shadaloo by Chun-li. Although he says he doesn’t even know who they ARE, she doesn’t believe him, and tries to take him into custody. Dan manages to get away however, but unfortunately he remains on the run from the police due to suspicion. Later he finds the REAL Shadaloo and kicks Balrog AND Bison’s ass as well as take their base cause he’s a BAD ASS
Dan learns about a new tourney and decides to enter it in order to bring even more glory to his father’s name. Sakura also stops by his dojo, and it seems like he got her back somewhat by telling her a lie that Ryu trained under him and stops by the dojo all the time just to say hi. At the risk of getting caught in a lie, he tells Sakura about the fighting tournament coming up and that the word on the street was Ken was entering it. And where Ken goes, obviously Ryu follows as well. And like the hyperactive teenage girl she is, she runs off happily in hopes of finding them there. Dan discusses later with Jimmy(Blanka) that the three of them were going to enter the tournament and show them just how great the Saikyo arts were. Despite the fact that he is the only one that uses it.
[Personality]
Dan is completely full of himself. Despite being the weakest character in the series, Dan still manages to think he is the greatest fighter ever. Even when Sakura and Ryu saves him and Blanka from an explosion, he is still not capable of admitting he was saved, and is a complete jerk about it, telling both of THEM to be careful.
Dan believes that fighting styles should be flashy, and it is assumed that this comes first place in his mind over, say, real technique and power of a style. He thinks that you cannot be a real martial artist without some form of showmanship. Sakura states that a lot of his moves are useless in a fight and this is probably because he focuses so much on flashiness.
He also appears to be very stubborn. Despite what people say about how crappy his fighting style is, he refuses to consider that even a possibility and still thinks his style is the greatest fighting style ever.
In a way, Dan is he kind of guy who wears his emotions on his sleeves. He doesn’t hide any emotions, and you can easily tell what he’s feeling at the time just by the look on his face. If he’s angry, you’ll see it, if he’s disappointed he’ll cry, if he’s joyful he’ll cry, if he’s sad he’ll cr-I think you get it.
Even though he has numerous flaws in his personality, Dan at his core, is a nice guy. He just also happens to be an idiot, which is where the cockiness and overconfidence in himself comes from.
[Specialties/Abilities]
He has so many abilities it’s a damn shame. I can’t even mention all of ‘em cause Word would break so let’s do the short version.
Although he is considered a weak fighter in the Street Fighter series, he is at the very least, an above average fighter overall and could probably take just about anyone off the street easily, despite how lack luster his fighting style is (Chun Lee comments that she can’t believe she got beat by such a weak fighting style in Alpha III). Because of his physique, he probably has above average strength and speed as well.
He is also capable of launching his own version of the Hadouken, which he dubs “Gadouken”. Unlike the Hadouken, it is not capable of traveling very far and is used only with one hand. Even at full power, it is only capable of traveling a couple feet, if that, away from his hand before disappearing into nothingness.
Dan also has an incredible jumping ability which he displays in one of his super taunts. He can also roll on the ground pretty fast. He has mastered the skill of rolling so well he is even able to jump mid-roll.
