Closed; The Grieving Process

It should have been no surprise to anyone that Daphne Greengass wasn't very good at managing her feeling, especially not the negative ones. Ever since she had heard the news about Pansy she had been throwing herself into her work, sneaking out early so that she could make it to the office first and canceling any dinner plans so that she could stay ( Read more... )

While he wasn't about to call himself any sort of aficionado on all thing Daphne Greengrass, he could tell when something was wrong. There was an overwhelming urge to always move on to the next thing, Daphne never wanting to settle on a conversation for too long. She was tense, a little dazed, always rushing out of his flat in the morning.

And it made him nervous.

They had just gotten to the point where they'd exchanged three very important words. Ones that Cormac hadn't said since he was sixteen years old and barely knew what the words meant.

He just wanted to make sure she wasn't getting cold feet.

Which was why he cut out of work early and headed directly to her office.

"Hey-" he said, hovering in the doorway, his hands tucked into his trousers. "Bad time?"

It was easy to see that Daphne wasn't herself- or, at least, not the self she was when she was in Cormac's presence. She blinked up at him as if he really wasn't there or she hadn't heard him right.

"What? Oh- no, come in," she told him, waving him into her office.

But Daphne didn't move from her desk to greet him like she normally would have, hovering there on her feet, heels kicked off, as she rested her palms flat against the wood surface.

"Did we have dinner plans? I must have forgotten-"

Well, if he had his suspicions that something was wrong before, it was really obvious now. He didn't think he'd ever seen her like this, shoes strewn in the corner, this sort of blank look on her face. He hesitated in the doorway. She barely moved. Usually, she was at least hugging him- or well, something.

His brow furrowed as he took a tentative step inside, his hand rubbing at the back of his neck.

"No-" he said, voice quiet. "I just wanted to see you, you know, if everything was alright-"

It was only then, when he lingered there, that Daphne realized something was wrong. He was always so confident and self assured but now he hesitated.

And it was because of how she was acting.

"Merlin, yes," she said, sighing as she finally come out to greet him and cross the space between them. She'd been in her own head for days now.

"I always want to see you-"
