The night of the Christmas party...but much much later.

The night happened like a dream - as most pureblood parties usually are. Daphne's head was heavy with information and champagne. She laughed when she was supposed to laugh and knew better when to keep quiet. There was dancing and polite conversation to keep the children busy and out of trouble. Terry was speechless. "Daphne?" he asked, his initial shock wearing off as her emotions dripped off her face. He'd never seen her this... Frightened. She looked so alone.

"Dad," he began, about to request leave, but his father was already waving him off, a knowing look in his eye. They shared a mutual thought... "Something is terribly wrong."

He grabbed Daphne by the small of her back and lead her to a further room. It seemed to be the master suite. He hoped Kirke's mum wouldn't mind too much.

"Terry, I didn't know where else to go," she mumbled, trying to hold herself together. It wasn't easy when Terry looked so concerned.

"I just..I had to get out. I couldn't...I don't want to..." The words were on the tip of her tongue but she couldn't say it.

"Shhh," he whispered, hand still placed on the small of her back. He rubbed it gently, then pulled her to sit on the edge of the bed with him. "Slow down, baby," he said soothingly. "Start over."

Daphne sat down, taking a deep breath. She felt a bit dizzy, dragged down from all the champagne. She didn't know where to begin.

"I want to be honest with you, Terry," she told him, reaching for his hand. "But I need to know you won't be angry with me. I need you to know I'm telling you this...because I love you."

She paused, almost embarrassed that she had said it.
