They play, rough and tumble on the grass. Their small frames are tossed around by each other, and their wide smiles and open giggles are there for everyone to hear and see. America is, as always, sunshine personified, light and airy and with the suggestion of the sky about him. Latvia, though often quiet and terrified, is bright. Bright hair, bright eyes and bright smile.
They stop long enough for America to chew gently on Latvia’s tail while they rest, catch breath, and Latvia flicks it, not overly bothered. Then on they play, until they are too hungry to play any more. They stop for lunch, and rest afterwards, lying in the field they play in. They stare together at the clouds, tracing shapes with their fingers.
Latvia tugs on America’s ears, which droop. America flinches away, retaliating by pulling Latvia’s tail. Then they are rolling over the grass again, playfully pulling and gnawing and biting bits of each other. Their mouths meet and they roll some more before coming to stop in the grass, under the sunshine.
Slowly, America pulls away, before realising what just happened, and stammers, blushing furiously. Latvia begins shaking, and, once America has climbed off him, Latvia flees, bright red and his tail trails behind, long and slender.
America sighs and collapses back into the grass, once more tracing the clouds in the sky with his finger. It isn’t even half as fun as when Latvia was there.
