I agree that Kubrick is one of the most overrated directors (and 2001 one of the most overrated films) of movie history, but I suggest you not develop a visceral aversion to him until after you've seen Dr. Strangelove.
I read The Remains Of the Day in school too (6th form). Most people in the class actually hated it. They couldn't get past the long words and writing style. When we got into groups to write chapter summaries people would ask "So who's actually read this bit?". Me, I liked it (and would end up doing all the work by myself). I love Pride and Prejudice too. We studied that in 7th form.
2001: A Space Odyssey- But that's the point. You're not meant to care about any of the people/characters. I found that I cared most about the computer, which is kind of scary. I saw this film on our projector so really big screen. I am happy to sit back and view pretty shots so didn't get bored.
Glad you had a great time with your friends! I, too, love the "Remember the day when we.." conversations I have with my old friends from school. It's fun to go over all the silly things we did.
