This also contains spoilers for the alternate ending of "My Mother, The Fiend".
This season has been so terrific so far. This was yet another really great episode, continuing the excellent streak that they are on. There were a couple of things that stopped it from being quite as great as the previous few episodes though.
I felt a little cheated by the character death being Meg. Had I not heard the character death rumour beforehand, maybe I would have been a little more shocked. As I had, I found it kind of anti-climactic, since when a rumour gets hyped like that I always hope that it's a major character that dies. And one that hasn't already almost died once and spent the entire season in a coma. Storyline wise, this could be interesting, though baby storylines make me incredibly nervous because they are so often season-ruiners. The writers seem to be so overloaded with creativity though that I don't think they'd introduce this plot element unless they have a really good idea of where it's going. This isn't a desperation move like it is when a lot of other shows have baby storylines.
Having seen the alternate ending for the previous episode, and Meg's "if something happens to me" earlier in this episode, give possibly suspicion that she had something to do with Meg's death. And yet it seems as if it was just a blood clot? Either way I'm glad they didn't go with Veronica getting blamed for Meg's death.
I loved the 12 Angry Men homage. The scene with the CEO guy losing his cool and letting his racism show through was right out of that film. And though the jury returned the wrong verdict (it wasn't proven at all beyond a reasonable doubt that the two defendants were guilty), it's hard to take too much issue with guilty people going to jail. One down side is that the storyline took up a lot of time and yet didn't seem to be connected with too much else that's going on in the show. For example, I don't think that this will have much impact at all on future episodes, unless Veronica being disliked by the 09ers is an important story point in the second half of the season. It did well to showcase the racial divides that exist though, and as a self contained story it really worked for me. Of course, I loved 12 Angry Men, so it would.
The sex tapes storyline was my favourite in the episode. Logan and Keith's scenes together were terrific, and Logan crying was especially effective because almost every time we see him he bottles up his pain and expresses it all through meanness or anger. That's what makes the character so great, but also what makes it all the more effective when he shows his true emotions. The songs they used in that scene was just beautiful too. I think they have to make it more clear that Aaron Echolls conviction was not dependent on those tapes, otherwise stealing the tapes would have been an absolutely insane move from Deputy Leo. I didn't get the "man, that was stupid" feeling at all from the episode, because like many characters pointed out, enough people have seen the tape to reliably testify as to its contents. So if Aaron does end up getting acquitted solely because of the tapes being destroyed, I'll feel annoyed with this episode because in that case it would be out of character for Leo to totally sabotage a case when he could have just sold copies, or just one tape. But I don't think he did ruin the case at all, so I'm not annoyed.
Really nice moment at the end seeing Wallace again. Nothing much to say about it. It was just a very nice, happy moment. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take his character in the second half of the season. His storylines were not very interesting in the early episodes of this season, so it was good that the character took a little break, but Veronica really needs the best friend figure around so it's really nice to see him back.
I really can't wait to see where the rest of the season goes!
I hate these long breaks shows go on in America! Over a month is way, way too long to have to wait for the next episode!
