I would recommend Burnt by the Sun. It's a Russian movie from 1993 and I love it because it was the first one I ever saw, despite the fact that it's a little heavy-handed with its message. Anyway, if you can get it in the UK, I'd love to know what you think. Also, you might rent Prisoner of the Mountains. Excellent movie!

Plucked off my DVD list mostly. Truly sappy chickflicks, the things everyone and his brother has definitely seen, and movies not worth the effort until you're truly bored are not included:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai across the Eighth Dimension. Supercool Peter Weller goes up against mad alien John Lithgow. With Ellen Barkin and Jeff Goldblum along for the ride.
Blade Runner. police, mystery
Dark City. seeking truth
The Fifth Element. police, drama
Galaxy Quest. actors in space
Much Ado about Nothing. Shakespeare in Italy
The Nightmare before Christmas. musical adventure
On the Town. musical adventure
Singin' in the Rain. musical adventure
Stay Tuned. fish out of water adventure
Time Bandits. chase adventure
Willow. chase adventure
Alaska. wilderness search adventure, drama
Arlington Road. government, drama
The Bone Collector. police, drama
Con Air. police, drama
L.A. Confidential. police, drama
Little Voice. personal journey, drama
The Negotiator. police, drama
Pushing Tin. air traffic controllers, drama
... )

maj has covered loads of the ones i would have chosen too...but here's a few more, some very old, some not so old. Just for the hell of it...

Mute Witness - excellent low budget thriller
Inherit The Wind - The famous Darrow Monkey Trails in the South or the US, black and white, Spencer Tracy..excellent!
Lion In Winter - History as it pretty much was, very sharp script!
The Philidelphia Story - B&W, Comedy
All About Eve - Bette Davise at her best
Barton Fink - The Cohen Brothers are wonder writer/directors..see all there stuff butstart with this!
The Princess Bride - charming, silly, warm and funny!
The Money Pit - Just a good laugh!
Pitch Black - sexy bad boy kicks alien ass!
Swimming With Sharks - the movie bis laid bare!
The Producers - Just great hamming it up fun!
The Great Escape - motorcycles are cool!!
Desperado - stylish bloodletting!

and finally...The Shawshank Redemption - a masterpiece that was robbed of the oscars it deserved by Fucking Forrest Fucking Gump!!

First, thanks! *g*
Second...those aren't in my DVD list, but there are a few now on the "to see" list if ever I start with the income thing again. So, thanks again.
I've seen Philadelphia Story, Princess Bride, The Producers, Swimming with Sharks (which cable cleaned up mercilessly...should seek out the fully-fowl-languaged version), and The Money Pit...enjoyed 'em all (even The Money Pit, a movie that is like cotton candy...tasty fluff). A lot of less-than-stellar-review flicks are worth a good revisit several years later.

More movies to consider: Mr. Blanding Builds His Dream House and Desk Set. Classics. But I looked and have yet to find a DVD of Desk Set.
