He doubts reason, which I think is backed up by AL’s statement that “there is a factor infinite & unknown.” He explains that people are emotional creatures who use reason to justify their decisions after the fact. This inverts modernity’s assertion of Reason as a guiding principle.

Not just modernity, but even older definitions of man as the "rational animal." This goes back to the Greeks.
