During the weeks that followed, the prince and the dragon met every single day. Some days, they would hang out with Yoochun in town; some others, they would stay at the beach together or fly over the green waters of the sea. The prince’s skills with the sword were getting better by the day, as he put his whole heart into it, impressing both his master and his older brother. On the other hand, he studied less and paid even less attention to what was going on in the kingdom.
-Spending too much of one’s time with the wrong people makes one less weary of their responsibilities, said the emperor.
-Love makes you stupid, said Yoochun.
But secrets are fragile. One can be destroyed by a single person, by the smallest incident, and it collapses on the spot, truth spreading too fast to be contained. And one day, what was bound to happen happened.
It all started with the red dragons. Those vicious red dragons that had been attacking small villages until then were slowly making their way towards the castle town. The royal army prepared the city for the upcoming attack, setting the heavy war machines as well as the giant water buckets in case of fire. In the castle, everyone was slowly getting ready for battle as they were expecting the red dragons to reach the castle town in but a day or two.
Prince Yunho was furious, roaming the town with a quick and solid pace. The whole city was in alert, waiting for the attack, and his little brother was nowhere to be found! Yunho had first thought he would be with his best friend Yoochun, so he was now going himself to see if he was at Yoochun’s place.
-Sorry, your majesty, but I’ve no idea where he is, said Yoochun.
-When was the last time you saw him?, asked the heir to the throne, voice pressing.
-Yesterday. He was with Changmin.
-Yesterday? So no one has seen him since this morning…
Yoochun was obviously starting to worry.
-Do you… Does your majesty think he might be in danger?, he asked.
-In all honesty, I am afraid it could be the case, replied the prince. How could one be so lost in his own thoughts to even show up when the castle is to be attacked! At least, he seems to be more perseverant in his sword training, lately, but if he was to wonder too far from the castle…
-Your majesty, I… I know a place where Jae goes often to retreat, to have some peace, started Yoochun, uncomfortable. It’s kind of a secret place, but… if he’s in danger…
-We need the youngest prince safe and sound at the castle, and that as soon as possible.
-I cannot tell about this place. I promised I would not.
-Fine. Go and check on him for me. It is my duty to stay in town in such a situation, and it is Jaejoong’s too. Remind him of that.
-Yes, my prince. I will, said Yoochun, bowing down.
Yoochun had been very surprised when prince Yunho had come knocking on his door, asking to see Jaejoong. As he ran in the fields towards the beach, he knew Jaejoong would be furious. The beach was his secret hiding spot and even though Yoochun knew about it, he had never been there before, understanding that Jaejoong often needed his time alone. However, today, he felt like he had no choice but to check on his friend, not only because prince Yunho asked him to, but because with the upcoming dragon attack, his best friend could be in danger, and he knew he would do anything to keep his friend from harm. Suddenly hearing a distant low growl, Yoochun stopped dead in his tracks, panting in the middle of the field.
-What was that?, he asked to no one in particular.
Could it have been a dragon?, he wondered. No, the dragons could not be so close yet! However, Yoochun could find no better explanation to the growling sound. He quickly looked to the sky, but saw no dragon or weird looking shadow. He was very afraid. He had never seen a dragon from up close and did not want to ever see one either. The sound had been coming from afar, from the coast, so he was probably not in danger. The realisation hit him like a ton of bricks: the sound had been coming from the coast, from the beach!
-Jae!, he shouted in panic, suddenly starting to run even faster, slowing down only when he arrived at the beach.
It was empty. The only sounds to be heard were the gulls and the water lapping at the sand in a regular pattern. On the sand, clear giant sized paw prints could be seen. Yoochun looked around frantically, not daring to call out Jaejoong’s name. What if the dragon was still there? He figured Jaejoong might be in one of the caves, since they were too small for a dragon to get in there and was about to head for the caves when he saw a little point on the horizon, over the water. Furrowing his brows, he tried to identify it. The point quickly grew bigger and bigger until he recognized it to be a dragon carrying something big in its paws. The creature was coming straight towards them and Yoochun quickly hid behind a rock. He really badly wanted to close his eyes shut and curl in a ball, but he had to look, had to see what was happening. If he was to escape, he needed to know where the monster was. He also needed to look out for Jaejoong. He crossed his fingers and wished that his friend was very, very far from the shore.
The dragon that landed on the sand was monstrous, greenish with horns around its face like a devil’s and a body as large as the ones from the folktales. It had caught a whale and dropped it on the ground. A whale! Yoochun felt his inside tightening and tried to breathe deeply to keep himself calm. If he moved right now, the dragon would notice him and he would get killed. Yoochun tried to still his shaking muscles, but to no avail. At least he was able to remain silent and not to run in sheer terror. Suddenly, a movement caught his eyes, making him look towards the caves. Just like that, almost like in slow motion, he saw Jaejoong walking out of a cave. Yoochun gasped and he felt his vocal cords constrict, no sound leaving when he tried to scream out Jaejoong’s name as his best friend found himself face to face with the reptilian monster. However, Jaejoong did not panic. He did not freeze, did not run, did not draw his sword or faint or scream. He pinched his nose.
-Gosh, Changmin! I told you about bringing your food on the beach. This is gonna smell for at least as week!
The dragon responded with a small grunt and Yoochun could only stare, mouth hanging open. Changmin? Wasn’t that Jaejoong’s new friend’s name? Why was Jaejoong talking to a dragon? Why wasn’t he afraid? Why hadn’t the beast killed him? The questions all bounced around in Yoochun’s head, making him even more confused. He looked as his best friend went farther away from the dragon and sprawled himself in the sand, visibly not worried about the dragon’s presence by the least.
After a moment, the dragon stopped eating and closed its eyes, concentrating, and a strange mist covered it. Yoochun could have taken that as an opportunity to flee, but he found himself captivated by the scene in front of him. When the mist was gone, he recognized Changmin, the boy he had met in the castle. He was naked and slowly went to the cavern in which Jaejoong had been, getting out with some clothes. Yoochun was unsure about what to think or feel. His best friend had made friends with a monster, and he knowingly brought him to town and even in the royal castle. He had even introduced the monster to his family and to his best friend! What was wrong with him?
Yoochun kept staring as Changmin sat near Jaejoong, and both started to talk. Yoochun was too far to hear what they were saying. They looked so comfortable near one another. It was not normal, he thought. Jaejoong was in love with a dragon? Was the beast perhaps… was it using magical means to seduce Jaejoong? Yoochun blinked in realisation. It must be that way, he thought. It would explain why his friend would fall in love with a dragon, even though he knew that it was a monster. There was no other possible option.
His friend and the monster now turned human seemed engrossed in their little world, so Yoochun got up as smoothly as he could and left the beach, looking carefully where he was stepping so he would not make any noise. Once he was far enough, he started running. Yoochun knew there was nothing he could do by himself. Only the royal army could save his friend, so he needed to hurry and tell what he had just seen to the emperor and to the older prince.
By the water, the prince and the dragon kept laughing and talking, unaware of the events at the castle town and of Yoochun, now running to tell about them to the emperor.
-What do you mean: you just realized that you smell with your nose?, asked Jaejoong, puzzled.
-Well, isn’t that weird?, responded Changmin. I mean, it’s a nose…
-Yeah! So it’s normal that you smell with it!
-Don’t you smell with your tongue?, asked Changmin in bewilderment.
-WHAT?, yelped Jaejoong in a high-pitched voice.
-Well, what use is there to your tongue if you don’t smell with it?
-I don’t know: eat, drink, kiss...
-Kiss? What’s that?
-Oh, come one, you’ve gotta be kidding me!, said Jaejoong, eyes to the sky.
By the confused and curious look in Changmin’s brown eyes, the prince figured he was not.
-Ok, he started. When you really really like someone and you want to be with them, you kiss them. It’s like, you put your mouth on their mouth. And you move your lips.
-Seems pretty boring. What’s with the tongue, then?
Jaejoong blushed. He knew because he could feel the skin on his face burning. He figured it must be a normal reaction since this was a weird subject to be talking about to your friend. He sighed.
-You’re not making this easy, are you? In a big kiss, you can, like, open your mouth and play with each other’s tongue. It makes the kiss even more intense, see?
-Not really, admitted Changmin. Kiss me, maybe I’ll understand better.
-No!, reacted Jaejoong, blushing even harder, heart pounding so strong it seemed like it wanted to bounce out of his chest. I mean, when you kiss someone, it has to be very special. It should be a person that you really love, someone who means a lot to you.
-But you mean a lot to me, Jae, replied Changmin, looking very serious.
Panicking, Jaejoong got up and nervously brushed the sand off his clothes.
-You and I are friends, Changmin. Friends do not kiss, that’s all.
-Oh, said Changmin, voice bearly above a whisper.
-I… I gotta go now. See you tomorrow, ok?
-Ok.
The prince almost ran off and when he arrived to town, he saw the war machines and the patrols. Was the town in danger? He made his way to the castle and went as quickly as possible to his father’s throne room. Yunho was with the emperor and as soon as the younger prince entered the room, his father was on his feet and rushing to hold him close.
-My son, I thought you to be in danger. Where had you gone?
-Only meeting with Changmin, father. I am sorry to have caused you worry.
-Very well, very well, replied the emperor, looking to the side briefly before meeting the prince’s eyes again. We have you safe and with us. You are hereby forgiven, son. Come, and let me tell you about the current situation, since by the look of it, you do not know what is going on.
Jaejoong’s father took his arm and took his to the large table where a map of the kingdom had been laid.
-The red dragons come from the south-west woodlands. They have been ravaging smaller towns and slowly making their way to the castle town. We believe their goal was to attack our town, and they only pillaged and massacred the smaller villages to feed until they arrived here. The beasts are a group of about twenty, according those who have seen the monster’s silhouettes in the skies. By tomorrow or the next day, they will be here. No one knows if they aim for a member of the royal family or for the wealth of our castle, but they must be stopped and they shall be. We have set our war engines in place, those specifically made for hunting down those dragons. You and your brother are to stay in the castle, as I will myself. Your brother and I will fight if necessary, but will try to stay inside as long as the option remains.
-Alright.
-Perfect, son. You may go to your room if you would like. I must discuss with the army’s commander, now.
-I shall go, then.
-Oh, only a last thing, my son.
-Yes?
-Remember this: dragons are hideous evil creatures. They must all be hunted down for the better future of our kingdom. They may try and fool a human, but there is always an evil plan behind a dragon’s words, as kind as they may seem. Do you not agree?
-I…, hesitated Jaejoong.
Why was his father suddenly talking like this? Had he learned about Changmin? No, that was impossible. How could he have? No one knew about their secret, thought Jaejoong.
-Son?, insisted the emperor.
-I agree, lied the prince.
Jaejoong retreated and his father gave him a concerned smile. Yunho simply looked at his brother’s back like he was trying to burn a whole through it.
-Do not be so prone to judge your younger brother, my son, said the emperor.
-Yoochun told us! He is collaborating with the enemy, father!
-He is under a spell. He cannot see clearly until that spell is removed.
-What shall we do?
-For the moment, an army cannot be sent by the coast. We need our man to protect the town. It will be easier to catch the dragon if it is in human form, though. The next time it will come to town, unknowing that it has been discovered, we shall kill it before it even understands what is going on.
-When will that be?
-Do not worry so much about your brother, Yunho. I am as anxious as you are, but patience, my son. Jaejoong is to be confined in the castle and will not be released until the monster is dead. He is safe, here.
Yunho nodded and smiled faintly. Jaejoong was safe, and he intended it to stay that way. Once the dragon would be dead, the spell on his brother would end and he would finally be away from this horrible monster manipulating him.
In his bed, that night, prince Jaejoong stared at the ceiling, lost in his thoughts. He could not help but replay the exchange he had had with Changmin that day.
-Kiss me, maybe I’ll understand better.
Those words seemed to trigger something in the prince’s whole body, a weird feeling making his stomach flip and his head lighten all of a sudden. Changmin had sounded so innocent, so true, not even knowing the effect he had on him. Jaejoong started to think some more: what would it be like to kiss Changmin? The prince felt cold sweat running down his back thinking of Changmin’s lips, of Changmin’s tongue. He stopped his train of thoughts, trying to fight the sudden urge to lick his dry lips. What was going on with his head?
-You mean a lot to me, Jae.
-You and I are friends, Changmin. Friends do not kiss, that’s all.
And friends certainly should not be thinking along the lines of what he was thinking right now. Was he attracted to Changmin?, he wondered. Was he attracted not only to a male, but to a dragon male? Jaejoong furiously shook his head, pushing his head back in his pillow. Friends, they were friends, he repeated to himself. Even being friends was not morally acceptable. Society did not allow such a relationship between a dragon and a human. Closing his eyes, the prince tried to think of something else, but everything always seemed to come back to Changmin, Changmin, always Changmin.
-Dammit, muttered the prince. Yoochun was right…
AN: Hello guys! This chapter is very long, right? It had to be since it is a turning point for the story. A dragon war, a growing love story, a best friend betrayal and plans to kill Changmin... so much drama!
