Ugh. I've never had a kidney stone, but my older brother has, and my boss gets them regularly. I guess there is no other way for you to make sure your bones stay strong with out getting kidney stones? Owie.
Calcium isn't the only culprit. My diet could be improved to cut out some of the other things that may lead to kidney stones, but now that I drink very little alcohol and have given up smoking for over a decade, I'm really hanging on to my dietary vices.
Part of it is simply psychology. If the pain hit me right after eating something that helped form stones, I'd stop eating it. Instead, it takes six months of building up and so I don't pay close attention to it.
