So very true, every word of it. The woman is unendurable, and her sudden rock-star popularity frightens me out of my wits. I'm stunned by the willingness of so many Americans to be blinded and duped by meaningless distractions. I am really deeply frightened that we're going to lose this one, too--just when so many people are hurting, and the pain is only going to get worse.

I'm in the same "batten down the hatches" place that you are. We have a peach tree and an orange tree, and I've been taking good care of them precisely because I was shocked by the $2.69 price tag on organic peaches this summer, and don't even want to know what oranges will cost this winter. We are doing everything possible to bring down our grocery bill and are considering out options for a winter garden.

It's deeply troubling to see our financial institutions falling down like so many dominoes. We deserve a true political debate that merits the seriousness of the times, not the Rove-esque garbage the McCain camp is tossing out there. But see, they don't want
