I zoomed through Salmon in a day, and curiously enough, found it very easy to read. It only kicked in at the very end, once the Dirk Gently chapters finish and an essay reminds us: oh yes, that's right, he's dead. Then the funeral service schedule. Sobering stuff.

May I suggest one more addition to the backlog? The Douglas Adams biography Wish You Were Here by Nick Webb. It gets the nasty dying business out of the way at the start, and the rest is far more fun and high spirited. A very refreshing approach - nobody's life should be defined by their death. I don't see why a biography should present things differently.

That copy of Shatterpoint is a spare copy I've donated to the FanForce as a community service, so no rush there. As for the Heart of Darkness claim, I'll get back to you in a year, when I make it that far in my own backlog. But it's definitely one of the EU's finest (and darkest) moments. I can extend similar praise to Karen Traviss's novels. Stover and Traviss both really challenge the idea that ( ... )
