CHARACTER INFO
CHARACTER NAME: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu
SERIES: The World Ends With You
RESERVED: Y
WISHLIST: Y
PERSONALITY: First impression-wise, Josh can come off as two
things. Either stuck-up or sweet. He's got an aura of "I'm better than
you", a tendency to be extremely sarcastic and patronizing, and keeps
his words open to interpretation. Not for nothing was he nicknamed
"the petit prince" by another person in the game. He's intelligent,
and doesn't hesitate to pull that over people who perhaps aren't as
much. Josh is someone who teases, especially with people he likes, and
has no problem guilt-tripping you to hell if he's not getting what he
wants. He's a manipulator, no question. Josh has his own agenda that
takes priority over anything else. People are there to be used for
furthering his goals, and he only connects with certain ones. He's a
refined person, but acts completely arrogant. Under all that, though,
he's mature and is kind to people who can figure out how to get past
his horrible social skills.
TIMELINE: End of game
BACKGROUND: Yoshiya Kiryu, known as Joshua...a powerful Reaper,
now ascended to the position of Composer of Shibuya. For a long time,
Shibuya had been the way he’d wished it, peaceful and moving forward
with its purpose.
But he began to lose faith in the city, watching as it turned inward
and became more selfish, violent, and utterly anti everything he
wanted. So he planned to destroy the city and rebuild it.
When he told his plan to his Conductor, Megumi Kitaniji, the other man
panicked. He tried to convince Joshua that Shibuya could be saved from
itself. Joshua decided to give Kitaniji a chance, and they made a
game-Kitaniji would have one month to save Shibuya, but Joshua would
get to pick a proxy to play for him.
Joshua chose his proxy, a young boy named Neku Sakuraba. In order for
the boy to play, though, Joshua would have to send him to the
Underground-in other words, kill him and send his soul to Limbo. His
rival, Sho Minamimoto, a Reaper Officer, heard about the plot and
thought to catch him off guard while he found the boy. Minamimoto had
tried in the past to kill Joshua, seeking his seat as Composer, but
had always failed.
When they met again, Neku was there, at a mural in Udagawa. Joshua saw
Minamimoto and shot him with the gun he’d brought to kill Neku, hoping
to slow him. The Reaper instead emptied his gun at the Composer, but
Joshua merely froze all the bullets in mid air, then shot Neku.
After a week, Neku had advanced through the Reaper’s Game, a survival
scenario that forces the souls of the recently dead to complete
certain quests over seven days with partners-all while evading the
Reapers and their Noise who seek to kill them permanently. At the end
of the week, the soul of the Player who does the best is allowed to
come back to life. The others-if there are others who survive-can
choose to play again, become a Reaper, or be permanently erased. Neku
was not chosen as the best, and decided to play again, having
developed a bond with his partner Shiki, who had been accepted for
reincarnation.
This time around, Joshua partnered himself with Neku, having limited
his power severely enough that he took on the guise of a fifteen-year
old boy. He wanted to get to know his proxy better, and Neku
reluctantly accepted his help. There was an unforeseen event,
though-Minamimoto had been chosen to oversee this Game. The Reaper
appeared, and instantly recognized Joshua, setting off a chain of
events for the week. He relentlessly pursued the pair as Joshua
dragged Neku around Shibuya, saying he was searching for the Shibuya
River. Joshua asked his friend, Sanae Hanekoma,-who in actuality was
part of the Angels, his superiors, in a sense- to give him a tracker
that actually was for measuring Kitaniji’s progress in his game.
The Conductor had been creating pins in the Realground that
mind-controlled the residents of Shibuya over time, but Joshua wasn’t
concerned. As long as Neku was still fine, the game was still his.
Eventually, there was a massive showdown with the Game Master at the
end of the week, and the pair beat him easily. As the pair moved in to
erase Minamimoto, he triggered a Level i flare, meaning to blow
up both them and himself. Joshua pushed Neku out of the way and
appeared to take the brunt of the attack-but in reality crossed over
to a different dimension just before the attack struck.
One week later, Joshua crossed back over to his dimension, meeting
Minamimoto in the Shibuya River. The Reaper had brought himself back
to life using a Taboo Noise sigil, and was raring to attack the
Composer. Finally, Josh snapped, unleashing his full anger on
Minamimoto, crushing him under one of his own sculptures. (It is
unclear whether or not Minamimoto died, but I believe Josh just
knocked him out really well) He met Kitaniji at the end of the River,
who had just been defeated by Neku and his new partner Beat. Joshua
allowed the Conductor to then capture him and tap some of his power.
Neku fought the Conductor again and beat him soundly, freeing not only
Joshua, but his other friends as well. At the end, the Composer
congratulated Kitaniji as his time ran out, and the Conductor was
erased.
Neku was shocked at the discovery that he had been playing to destroy
Shibuya, and thought Joshua had betrayed him. Joshua then handed him a
gun, saying they’d play one last game.
They’d shoot on three, and the one left would get to do what he wished
with Shibuya.
The boys raised their guns, but Neku faltered, not being able to bring
himself to shoot who he had considered a friend. Joshua smiled and
shot Neku-but didn’t kill him. Instead, he brought Neku and all his
friends back to life, and kept Shibuya, realizing that the city still
could change, especially with people like Neku Sakuraba.
One week later, he watched as the friends all met in the real Shibuya,
Hanekoma with him. Hanekoma remarked that what they did will have
repercussions, but everything’s normal again. When Joshua remained
silent, he said that the Composer seems down, but reminded him that
it’s the others’ world. At that, Joshua flew away, leaving the Angel
to watch for him.
ABILITIES: Static: He'll have a good hand with firearms.
Locked: (needs phone before he can do anything)
Falling objects: With the phone, Josh can summon random falling
things, like signs, SUVs, etc. After hitting the target, they
dematerialize.
Moving enemies: Phone again. He can move enemies over a short
distance. If done fast enough, this might stun the enemies temporarily
in a sort of "WTF just happened?" way.
Jesus Beams (my personal name for them): Also tied to the phone. With
this power, Joshua can levitate, summoning little spirits of light to
attack the target and then poof. If he times it right, it will end
with a pillar of light being summoned to deal heavy damage.
Pillar of Light: By focusing his power, Josh can create a pillar of
light to basically vaporize the enemy.
Anything else would need a Neku in this world...
