The evening started simple enough ...
"Watanuki, the door."
"Eh? Are you expecting guests? It's rather late isn't it?"
"They're already here."
... and the guests seemed normal enough ...
"Why exactly am I carrying this box for you, again?"
"I thought it was because you were going to try and convince me this was a bad idea at least one more time."
"..."
"He's got you there, Colonel~"
"That alcohol had better be worth this."
"Watanuki, bring out the best brandy that's towards the back of the storage room." Then softly, under the now-raised voices and teasing argument: "They're going to need it tonight."
... but what he didn't expect ...
"And this is Elysia when she got her first rocking horse! Look at that precious smile~ ♥"
"Hughes, you're not seriously going to show the whole box of pictures, are you. You're too drunk already."
"Not as much as you. Lighten up! I want to look through them one more time. We haven't even gotten to her potty-training yet~"
"... Eh? One more time --"
"Watanukiiiiii, another bottle!"
"Haven't you already had three?!"
"Look, look, and here's one of her playing dress up~"
"Ooh, I have a similar photo of Watanuki. He probably has the same bonnet on!"
"YOU DO NOT!! -- Ah! Mustang-san, don't lean like that, you're gong to --!"
"... he fell over."
"So the Flame Alchemist really is no good with this kind of liquid either."
"Another bottle~!"
... what he wasn't prepared for ...
They'd gone towards the back of the shop, in one of the rooms Yuuko keeps aside and rarely uses. It would have been a pain if they had to drag the colonel back with them, but he woke up in time to walk back himself.
Watanuki didn't mean to look inside as he passed by to put away cleaning supplies he used earlier, but the bright flickering caught his attention. A movie? He slid the door open a little wider, quickly identifying the three people standing in the middle of the room, the one with glasses standing a ittle further away than the others. He was staring at what Watanuki thought was a projected image on the wall, but ...
It was as though he saw through a window, a frame outlining the bright scene playing right before them. A sunny outside with rows of people seated, dressed in their "Sunday best", their attention on the bride and groom under the flower archway as they faced each other and completed their vows with a kiss. Here Watanuki noticed there was no sound in the room, the audience clapping happily and silently when they new couple turned to face them. Here there was a sound, and Watanuki's attention drew to the man with glasses again. He could only see part of the man's face, but there were clearly tears staining his cheek and his mouth spread in a smile.
He glanced at the others, surprised to see such different reactions. The other man's head was bowed, face turned away. In the dark room with the only source of light coming from the window, his stiff posture and clenched hands looked almost dangerous. Yuuko was beside and slightly behind him, elegant and cold, her arms crossed underneath her breasts and staring straight before her.
Her stance shifted and she was suddenly looking at Watanuki. Flustered, he started to blurt out an apology for intruding, but she raised a finger to her lips. Stilling, he glanced back over to the window when she did, watching as the newlyweds reach out to their families. The bride was hugging her mother when Watanuki realized there was an empty chair in the front row, next to where mother and daughter were standing. They pulled back, the bride pausing for a moment looking down at the vacant seat. She had been smiling the entire time, but this ...
Watanuki continued watching a few more minutes before finally becoming too guilty of witnessing the scene, sliding the door closed as the couple danced amongst their friends.
... was the way people handled their grief.
"Yooo, Watanuki!"
"Hughes-san! Are you feeling better today?"
"Oh, that hangover was nothing. I think Roy is still groggy from it. But more importantly, take a look at this picture! I had forgotten I tucked this away somewhere, but Yuuko was kind enough to let me keep this one since it was an honest mistake. Aren't my wife and daugter just too cute~?"
"... Ah, Hughes-san, these names written here are up-side down?"
"-- Oh. Sorry about that. I got so excited about it that I was holding the photograph backwards!"
"... Hughes-san ..."
