Five times John experienced grace

1. When he made the decision to trade himself for Jothee. The peace of going to Scorpius was brief, but he held close to it for all the seconds of turmoil that followed.

 

1. In Unity with Zhaan. That Zhaan’s spirit was powerful and layered frightened and mesmerised him. Sunday school images of saints and martyrs on their knees flashed through his mind; this was what it must be like to commune with God.

1. His first shuttle launch. When he turned and saw Earth against the vastness of space - blue and green and brown, curved and so beautiful - his heart skipped a beat. He would hold on to the image in the years to come because he’d only see it six times in all. John died many light years away from his home planet.

 

1. The first time he ever saw his son, this living, breathing proof that John existed and loved and fought. The next time that it’s the first time he sees his son - when he finally awakens from a three day coma - the rush of love and terror and regret is so fierce, he blinks. Every time he sees D’argo is like the first time and John knows he’s been blessed.

 

1. Coming home to Moya after being raped on Arnessk. He wanted Moya’s warm gold walls and comforting sounds; she was big enough to let him run for hours along her decks, and unlike a planet, small enough to run away with him tucked safe inside when he needed her to.
