The following is my entry for the stargateland challenge "Stargate Continued"
Stargate: Extinction
In the year 2060, Earth is overpopulated, the planet unable to provide for it's people. The government starts a colonization program, sending groups of people to uninhabited planets to begin a new life.
In the year 2063, a Tau'ri colony uncovers a tomb with remains of an alien race. A week and a half later the colony is dead and a plague has been spread to other colonies and planets. The plague has spread too far and to fast and can not be contained.
A team of scientist and doctors is put together to try and find a cure for the horrible disease.
Richard Armitage as:
Dr. William Lewis, is a 40 year old Xeno Microbiologist and lead scientist in charge of finding a cure. Born in London he is happily married with two children. Dr. Lewis is a kind and charming man with a fondness for old movies. While a brilliant man, Dr. Lewis often loses site of the greater good, over-thinks a situation and generally does not do well under pressure. This serves as a constant annoyance to Dr. Harkov, who considers him nothing more than a figure head. Usually in charge of insuring that they rest of his team do not do anything, unethical.
Jeremy Irons as:
Dr. Matthew Balic, is a Neurologist and the 62 year old son of Lt. Matthew Scott of the lost Destiny expedition. Dr. Balic's father died when he was only 10 years old, however he only learned the truth when he was 17. Dr. Balic is bitter and has a bit of a temper as well as not believing the Stargates to be worth the sorrow they brought. Because of his father's death and the lies that followed Dr. Balic hates and distrust the military. He became a doctor after losing his daughter in a car accident and his wife had committed suicide. Dr. Balic tends toward being a loner, however he is quite good with children.
Gillian Anderson as:
Dr. Sofiya Harkov, is a 42 year old Russian Epidemiologist. An arrogant know it all, confident, demanding and impatient. She is constantly at odds with the entire team, believing herself above them. While a brilliant scientist, Dr. Harkov's abrasive personality makes her incredibly difficult to get along with. Unfortunately for those around her, she is as good as she thinks she is, meaning she's to important to push out an airlock. Dr. Harkov is usually seen bumping heads with Dr. Lewis whom she believes is a waste of space. Sofiya is only nice to her plants and is very happily unmarried.
Zooey Deschanel as:
Dr. Marie McKay, is the 36 year old daughter of Rodney McKay and Jennifer (Keller) McKay and a successful Oncologist. Born and raised after the Stargate program has been declassified, Marie has lived her entire life living under her father's shadow, as a result she pulled away from her father's influence to become a doctor instead of a scientist. She is a brilliant down to Earth woman who despite having every right too, chooses not to boast. Like her father she is quite difficult to get along with. She has a passion for her patients and surprisingly good bedside manner.
Neil Patrick Harris as:
Amun, is Goa'uld scientist that has been living on Earth for many years. Due to a mental defect Amun is vastly different than any Goa'uld and even Tok'ra. He is very upbeat and easily excitable. Amun is also incredibly positive, always looking on the bright side of things even when there should be no bright side to look to. He's enthusiastic about everything he does which can grate on the nerves of the rest of the team. While he's incredibly smart, as was would be expected of a Goa'uld, Amun is too trusting of people much like a young child.
Timothy Olyphant as:
Lt. Michael Alan Rush is the 41 year old son of Chloe (Armstrong) Rush and Dr. Nicholas Rush. He was born and raised on Destiny which, by the time of his birth had been returned to working order by his father. Unable to cope with the fear that he would never live up to his fathers name, Michael joined the military at the age of 18 greatly disappointing his father. His mother and father died in 2061 at the ages of 75 and 100 respectively. Lt. Rush is second in command to Col. Amy Young who is, 3 years his junior. While he has a brilliant mind and is quite calm and calculated, Lt. Rush is reckless with his own life and often disregards orders, usually in an effort to save the life of someone else.
Despite saving the lives of many members of the Destiny crew, he never brags and remains quiet and reserved. Michael was given his middle name in honer of his late maternal grandfather, Senator Alan Armstrong.
When the story begins we find the team standing before a colonel, who is explaining the purpose of their mission. He goes onto explain the precautions taken to insure the team studying the plague do not become infected. We learn that the team is on a ship and that they and everyone else on board was isolated for three weeks to insure they were not infected.
During the course of the first episode we learn how the plague progresses. Upon exposure it takes one to two weeks for symptoms to begin showing up however once those infected begin showing symptoms they have 24 to 48 hours before being claimed by death.
As the episode progresses we see how the team interacts with each other. Dr. Lewis and Dr. Harkov are generally at odds with each other while Doctors, Balic and McKay wisely stays out of the arguments. Amun however tries to act as a mediator with little success.
Throughout the series the team of doctors and scientist study the plague. A team studying the planet where the plague was first released discover a hidden city deep beneath the surface. After months of careful study it's discovered that the plague was not a natural plague but a bio-weapon created by a now extinct race during a civil war. However they were wiped out by the very plague they'd created.
About midway through one of the first two seasons a subspace broadcast is picked up by the Tau'ri Alliance, the lead ship of Earth with technology from all of Earth's advance allies, hence the ships name. The signal is garbled for an unknown reason and must be deciphered. Eventually the signal has been cleaned up to the point that it is mostly understandable.
What is heard surprises everyone. The signal is a transmission from a man claiming to be on the thought lost Destiny. He explains that the communication stones has been lost to the original expedition cutting them off from Earth. The man goes on to explain that the original expedition are dead and that those currently on board are their descendants.
The man then explains that, they had figured out how to broadcast a subspace signal that could transverse billions of light years, while remaining mostly intact. The man states that the broadcast is essentially a recording as the signal takes several weeks to reach it's intended destination, making real time communication impossible. The rest of the recording is instructions on how to send a broadcast such a vast distance.
The crew, using the instructions given by the man send a return broadcast. Inquiring to how they survived, what exactly happened to the original crew and who the man even was as he had not revealed his name. It takes several episodes, a month and a half, before they receive a reply. In that time, many planets, both Tau'ri colonies and all ready inhabited worlds have been wiped out by the plague.
Unfortunately the plague had managed to reach the Pegasus galaxy and now threatens to wipe out humans in both galaxies. The team working on finding the cure have sense discovered that, due to the virility of the plague once a world is infected it remains so for centuries. As a result the few isolated worlds with human life would eventually be wiped out as well.
The plague would leave both the Milk Way and Pegasus galaxies uninhabitable by humans and due to the long incubation period, relocation to another galaxy is not a viable option.
When the Alliance finally receives a response from the man on Destiny the crew is once again shocked by what they learn. The man reveals himself to be Lt. Michael Rush, son of Chloe Armstong and Dr. Nicholas Rush.
Summer Glau as:
Dr. Alice Jacobs is the 28 year old doctor in charge of insuring the crew is in good health while the team studying the plague work to find a cure. She is a naive and optimistic young woman.
