Nerds (like you and I) do that all the time; gathering words from context and usually only from reading them. We also often have pronunciation errors from only ever seeing the word written as opposed to hearing it spoken.

I think the adjective that does what you were thinking "artesian" did might be "artisanal".

Oh, I am hell on french words... french + potential undiagnosed dyslexia = people only sometimes recognize the word I'm trying to say. It took my girlfriend forever to figure out what I meant by muh-cray-b. I still can't say it right, I have to ask her "What's that dark bloody french b word again?"

She says that some days, it's a good thing I'm cute. *headshake*
