I wanna smack somebody

I don't know who the author is, but somebody needs to find this guy and kick his ass.  It's just a fluff piece talking about music trends that are never coming back.    The only problem is, the majority of the trends he's talking about are revivals of old ones.  Friggin' moron.  And friggin' moron editor for giving it the go-ahead to publish on the ( Read more... )

No story in particular (I know, a terrible way to make an argument). I stopped really listening to them years ago because I got tired of hearing them talk out their asses. It's one thing if they're talking about opinions or pop culture or shooting each other in the balls with a BB gun. Fine, whatever, but way too often they talk about something that has a definate correctness or incorrectness about it (legality, history, who was in a particular movie or tv show) and they just make it up, when the internet is right in front of them. And if the talent crew is too busy talking to callers or whatever, they have interns and producers who's job it is to do that. The only time I can stand to listen to them is if they have a good guest on - as long as they shut up long enough to let the guest talk.

You need to re-read that article. It's saying exactly what you are saying... these trends aren't coming back, unlike a bunch of others that have. He identifies two trends that were recycling of older ones... and that recycling failed quickly. For example, he cites the revival of swing bands a few years back and predicts that it won't happen again. I'd have to agree... it was a wonderful thing at the time and I still like all that stuff, but I don't see the industry backing it again after it's quick slide back into fringe ( ... )

He's not saying "these are awful, please let them stay dead," but that they are dead and not coming back. If something resurfaces every decade or so (like boy bands for example), how can you say it's gone for good? He's disproving his point with his own evidence.

And ok, the MSN Guy Manual surely isn't the Wall Street Journal, but still it was listed on the main page, right next to the legit news and other articles that aren't a total waste of 3 minutes.

I have no need to rant about Newt Gingrich. There are plenty of people already doing that. I also know better than to pay attention to him when I'm looking for something mindlessly entertaining. Maybe I'm just jealous that I can't get paid to write garbage. Or maybe I just like to smack hipster kids when they think they're cool and getting away with crap.

That last part I can get behind. Good points on boy bands and thier herpes-like resurfacing, but knowing some mook can turn out drivel and get a paycheck for it is certainly frustrating. I try to keep karma in mind... he'll pay for his mediocre talents in some way. Maybe he'll end up losing that job and have to finish his career writing bulk test for the warning labels on jock itch medication.

At the height of the swing revival, I read an interview with Eddie, the lead singer of Royal Crown Revue. They asked him point blank if he thought the revival was here to stay, and he laughed in their faces. He said it was bound to fade back when the next trend was manufactured, and that all the bands he knew were enjoying the fame while it lasted before going back to playing jazz clubs and ballroom society parties. But he also made a very good point: "Y'know, the kids who've paid good money for dance lessons, that's not going away. These are steps you can do when you're ninety. I'd like to see someone try to say that about any other style."

Just sayin'. :-)
