I was bothered as well that most of the cast were Chinese instead of Japanese. I also wish they spoke japanese instead of english, it would have made it more culturally accurate.
But considering the changes, the movie was still very well done. Im surprised on how impressed i was with it. It could have been better, but that doesnt mean it was a bad movie :) you must definitely watch it sometime!
I was impressed with Zhang Zi Yi's performance, especially regarding her English. She spoke it fluently and with hardly any accent :)
She did a great job with her performance but when it came it her English it was eh. I know she's not a native speaker and stuff but there were definitely some instances where she was speaking Engrish. But thanks to my anime-watching/reading retarded subtitles experience. I got most of it.
Dude, Hatsumomo was awesome. She's soooo pretty when she doesn't have all her Geisha makeup on.
Gong Li was great as Hatsumomo! definitely got the "Bitch" personality down :D
But considering Zhang Zi Yi learned those lines in such a short period of time (around a couple of months) combined with all that Geisha training, you gotta admit her English was quite impressive. It cant be perfect but it was very well done.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie- because I'm still dreading it. I'm not sure if I want to really watch it. I can't stand Zhang Ziyi and I have issues with a lot of the decisions they made for the film. Yet it's one of my favorite books...so I'm rather conflicted. =_=
I hope you do decide to see it. I came out most optimistic than i had hoped, i especially loved the way they ended the movie. If you do decide to go watch it, let me know what you think! :)

Ahh because of your review about the film I can't wait to see it. Because stupid Europe doesn't gets it in cinema I need to wait till it comes out on dvd and that will take some time. Though I read the book. Just a question about it and please answer; Is the movies exactly the story from the book or are there some other elements they have put in? Please no spiolers ^^ I still want to watch it.

the movie follows the book quite closely during the first half of the story. There are some changes they added into the second half of the movie but nothing too big. You should still be able to follow along with the movie and since youve read the book you can tell which parts have been added in.
