This was the final line of a relay call I just recieved from a semi illiterate who is holding me personally responsible for the fact that her friend lost her house, is on SSI with 3 kids and want's to rent a 2 bed apartment for 700 dollars with a 900 dollar income. This would leave her with 50 dollars a week to feed, clothe and care for 3 kids. ( Read more... )

Cheer up, smooshy. Remind yourself that you're only the messenger. That works for me when I'm telemarketing and repeatedly being yelled at by parents of RISD alumni. "Haven't you taken enough of our money? Our kid didn't get any financial aid, he graduated two years ago and he still doesn't have a job, you should be ashamed of yourself!" Yes, yes, I should, but I have to eat, too. May I verify your home and business information, ma'am? Your husband is still President of Chase Manhattan Bank? I apologize for my boldness, ma'am, but could your husband's six figure salary be the reason why your child didn't receive aid? Would you consider donating to ME personally? I'll make the phone calls stop, I promise.

Yeah, the world is a wacky place. There's not enough to go around, and some people still demand a second helping. Now *I* need a drink.

Aw Cory, chin up, you have to try not to let stuff like that get to you. Almost any job where you have to talk to customers/tenants/etc. you're going to get blamed for things that are out of control. Old ladies that used to bitch at me about the price of asparagus is a little less severe than your case, but most everyone can relate. Just keep doing what you've got to do, and remind yourself that it's just a job. Now go treat yourself to a few drinks and a long hot bath, mister.
