I need to lie down...

So I delivered the sound design for that Direct TV commercial earlier today (messed-up radio static, dinosaurs, pigs and whooshes, youknow, the usual thing) and it looks like I have the job for sound design for a HIV spot (I’ll know for sure next week ( Read more... )

Ha ! Yes, good point.
Animal Cops needs better music than that cheesy stuff they use :)

It's for the Sci-Fi channel and it's one of those cheesy (there's that word again) investigations/revelations/whatever shows bout "strange phenomena" (inserts cheesy thermin sound here).
If I didn't have the commercial thing trying to happen, and that game (which I've just had confirmed is on) I'd do it just for the money, but i can't do them all and it's the TV show that's the least interesting creatively.

Animal Planet would be much more fun for sure :)

... I should try and find a Lustmord sound-alike and pay them to do it for me :)

p.s. : Today's word is "Cheesy"

I usually do, which is why I end up doing things that I find worthwhile rather than the ones that make lot's of money.
I just like the idea of making a decent living for a change (a long story which I won't go into involves my getting fucked badly four years ago which set me back a lot on more levels tan one)

Both the TV thing and the commercials are both "day job" things, something one does only to get paid. There's no other reason to do either. Getting paid for such day jobs will, in an ideal world, allow one to indulge in what one really wants to do.
I know its the same thing in your world with creativity and making a living.

With commercials is because they're so short and as such are trying very hard to grab your attention plus are seen as pretty much disposable, that you're able to get away with more?

Actually, commercials are a lot of work, and have very tight deadlines, and you have very last minute warnings that you're doing one at all, but the money is good in relation to the hours worked.
What I'm trying to do it get myself into the position where I'll only be doing commercials that would be interesting from a creative viewpoints, flexing my sound design muscles as it were. But first I have to work my way in by working on things I have no real interest in.

I've always despised the advertising world and it's crass exploitation and condescending attitude, but I don't think it hypocritical to take money fro these people, they're going to give it to somebody anyway, and I might a well put it too good use.

As i've said before, this stuff sure as hell beats a real job.

8-12 weeks is such a small segment of time... and you wouldn't be totally unavailable, but your scarcity would make you all the more dear and all the more desirable to the commercial people...

Commercials are an endless fount of rapid deadlines and flash in the pan creativity... you could do both... you can always do more commercials after the show... and the fact that you're doing shows will also increase your overal cachet... why am I telling you this, you know the score..
no pun intended

This is what our VP of product would call 'a high class problem'

Enjoy. Hey, it also means you'll become too busy to meet me for lunch after all, and then I will have to wait.

Actually I would be, these type of things usually mean 14-18 hour work days.

Alas no. M"My people" (agents and reps) have been working on getting me into the commercial world for the last couple of months, presentations, DVD's etc, and they think that if I was unavailable for that long their little campaign would loose momentum, the industry being quite fickle in that regard.

That's why it's tricky to work out the best approach, my guts tell me to invest the time and take a risk with the commercial stuff.
At the very least you'd be amused by reading my moaning about it here :)

Well, you know where to find me, though perhaps I should stay more enigmatic and virtual ?
